We were picked up about 10am for our Fraser Island tour from Mooloolaba by a monster of a truck (see pictures!). After driving for a couple of hours we arrived at Rainbow Beach where we had lunch and then got the ferry over to the island. Those of you who have been will know there are no roads on the island and that the only mode of transport to get around is 4x4 driving along the beach, so our monster was more than sufficient!!! On the first day there we went to Lake Wabby after a long walk there! We had a swim then went back to the resort to cook some dinner and then had drinks with the group. We had a brilliant group - A french couple, 4 girls (from America, Australia and Canada) and another 4 girls studying engligh in Brisbane (from Switzerland, Italy and Korea). After many a drink we all decided it would be a good idea to go swimming in the resort pool!
The next day we went to quite a few sights, including: Eli Creek, Indian Head, a shipwreck and some sand dunes, seeing most of the east coast of the island!!! At Indian head the weather suddenly went overcast and it rained really heavily!!!! Apart from that the weather was really nice the whole weekend we were there! That night we again cooked some pasta (student staple!) and had some drinks with the group. We randomly bumped into Liz (from Cairns) too and ended the night in some rounds of sand wrestling! When we saw a dingo (not advised to go too close to them - it has been known that they attack human) we called an end to the procedings and went to bed!
The next day we went into the middle of the island and went into the Rainforest and Lake Burrabin. Then we headed back to Rainbow Beach on the mainland for lunch before going back to Mooloolaba via a Ginger factory!!!
The next day Jonny and Rach had kindly offered to give us a lift back down to Brisbane so we spent the morning at Australia zoo. It was really quite moving at times seeing videos of Steve Irwin and all the staff were so keen on keeping his legacy alive. The highlight though had to be cuddling a koala! (See pics). He was suprisingly heavy and really stunk but that didn't matter! The kangaroos were also a sight worth seeing but because it was so hot that day most of the animals were wanting to stay in the shade away from the sun's glare. The croc show in the crocosium was good, although the croc they used to showcase didn't want to play ball and it took many attempts for them to come out of the water and snap! We caught a local bus to Landsborough where we waited for an hour or two for a connecting bus back to Mooloolaba. There was an amazing pub there where we had lunch (massive burgers!) and the boys took part in some gambling (which is a massive thing over here and takes place in all pubs!). Once back in Mooloolaba we caught a lift with Jonny and Rach and were in Brisbane in no time!
