Seals, seals, seals, and orca!
As you might of guessed we're abit excited about what we did yesterday and the photos we've just got back! We've finally reached the south island and headed over some amazing scenery to Nelson. From there we took a day trip up to Kaiteriteri in the Abel Tasmen Bay National Park- from the beach there the 2 of us and a crazy bearded old man went to Tonga island to swim with the seals!
It was one of the most amazing experiences as the seals swam all around us, brushing past us and swimming right up face to face. Go look at the pictures!
On the boat back to the beach the boat driver suddenley started shouting "Orca! Orca!". And there they were, about a dozen orca (killer whales) surfacing around us- initially at distance, we followed them (as did a few other boats and kayakers) until one came up RIGHT next to the boat! We could see the scars on its back and its mouth! A very rare experience apparently as they're not seen there very often.
Back at the beach, we got into a 2 man sea kayak and went for a paddle around the nearby bays over to 'Split Apple Rock'. An awesome day.
Now we're back in Nelson today on a very slow internet connection so haven't managed to upload many photos. We'll try again soon.
Alot of other stuff has happened since the last postcard and we'll fill you in later.
Ta ta.
Ian and Clare.
