3 days in Siem Reap!
When arriving at the Thai/Cambodia border we were charged for overstaying our visas! They gave us some paper that referred to us as offenders. Whey! Offender Young!
Our journey to Cambodia was so loooong, we travelled for over 27 hours from Koh Tao to Chumporn by boat - a very rocky boat may I add - then from Chumporn to Bangkok on a sleeper bus which dropped us off in the middle of no where where there just happened to be a whole lot of taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers waiting to scam you. Boy how I haven't missed Bangkok. Luckily we knew where we were and headed for nearby Kao San road (on foot) to use the wifi at McDonald's to find out how to get to the bus station they should of dropped us off at. We flagged down a taxi who quoted us something ridiculous like 200baht to get there, after some bargaining he put the meter on like we asked. I am experiencing that many Thai people become annoyed if they can't scam you. On arriving at the bus station I gave the driver the money but he insisted he didn't have change and gave himself a nice tip. I let it slip because it was like 6am and we were nakard but it does make me mad.
The journey onwards to the border was nice, the Cambodian landscape is very flat and pretty, lots of stray dogs on the roads and lots of locals on scooters dodging the strays. The crossing took time but that was expected.
We arrived around tea time and went out to grab a bite to eat. I had my first Khmer curry which was lovely, not very spicy. We then partied at our hostel playing drinking games with other guests until the bar closed.
Day 2: We hired a Tuk Tuk and visited a lot of the smaller temples at Angkor then grabbed some street food and popped by the night market - I bought a bum bag! My gran will be proud!
Day 3 We got up at 4:45am to head to the sunrise at Angkor Wat, unfortunately it was slightly overcast however it was still amazing to see. We spent 2 1/2 hours there exploring and watching the Chinese take some hilarious pictures of each other posing.
We saw a great amount of the country side on the Tuk Tuk ride. Naked toddlers by the side of the road playing with sticks, fruit sellers with baskets full of bananas, men and boys fishing in small lakes lined with beautiful trees. Everything is so much greener than I expected. The scenery is just beautiful. Think I might really really like Cambodia!
Next stop Battambang by boat!
