Claire's Travels
Today we went on a day trip to Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. Its just off Hervey Bay, on the mainland. A little ferry took us over first thing in the morning. It felt like we were somewhere in Europe as everyone around us was speaking either French, Italian or an Eastern European language.
We got off the ferry and were greated by Captain Kangaroo - our tour guide for the day. 50 of us loaded onto a giant 4x4 bus and headed into the depths of the island...unfortunately we drove up behind a parked van so had to reverse a good few km back to the staring point. Those unlucky enough to have followed us up the road had to do the same.
Our first stop was Central Station, where they used to control the logging on the island. Unfortunately it started to rain quite heavy (not prepared at all in flip flops, shorts and a t-shirt!) Thankfully we got cover from the trees as we walked through the bush and it had practically stopped by the time we came out.
We headed along the 75mile beach and visited Eli Creek (4 million litres of fresh water comes out of here and into the sea, every hour!) and the ship wreck. We then headed back for lunch ( a little disapointing - wierd combo of buffet food!)
Our final stop was Birabeen lake - its completely fresh water and the sand surrounding it is so white! Would have been lovely to swim in if it had been a tad warmer!
All in all a really great day!
