Ru and Bear's Global Escapade
What do you know about Cambodia? Who remembers the Blue Peter appeal to help Cambodian children in the 1980's? We've only been here for 3 days, but already it's been such an education. We had little idea about the horror of the Khmer Rouge until we came here. Now we feel incredibly blessed to have been born in the West. We've both read the amazing autobiography of a girl the same age as us who survived the atrocities of Pol Pot's regime. If we'd been born over here instead of in England, her story would be ours too.
The effects of the war are still starkly evident. We've seen lots of amputees and ex-pats, and we have visited the 'S21' Genocide Museum, the Killing Fields and the Foreign Correspondant's Club. Yet, despite everything the Cambodian people have suffered, they are an amazingly friendly nation. It's all very humbling.
Heading north tomorrow to visit a friend who manages a health development programme in a remote village, somewhere up the Mekong. Should be interesting getting there!
Love from us xx
