Wahey! Nice weather this morning!
Claire got her cut and Dave went to get the tickets for the big event tonight - the world famous penguin parade. This is where 500+ 'little penguins', the smallest in the world at 30cm come t shore every evening after a long day out at sea eating fish. They come out in groups and walk up the beach to find their burrows for the night.
It was a cold afternoon and windy as we checked out the Nobbies and Seal Rocks. The seals are about 2 miles out from the land on their rocky home. You need binoculours to see them but after we paid 2$ for about 10 seconds worth of vision and saw nothing but rocks we decided not to bother looking anymore.
We made our way to the penguin parade before sunset. After waiting for about an hour for the little critters to appear, it had just gone darkk when far out in the distance a Little Penguin came to shore, had a quick look round for any predators before making a dash back into the sea. A couple of minutes later a couple more Little Penguins came up onto the beach and again had a quick look round before darting back in to the water. This happened over and over again for about 10 minutes with the group getting a little bigger every time. We couldn't help but laugh at them when they had all plucked up the courage to make a run for the beach and either a wave would came and knock them all down and wash back them back into the sea or one at the back would chicken out, run back into the ocean and then all the others would follow him, usually leaving just one of the Little Penguins at the front totally alone until he realized his mates had all gone back into the water when he would soon dash back in after them,
Eventually a group would huddle together like commandos crouch forward a little and storm the beach, waddling up to the banking. This happened for about an hour with groups appearing all along the beach making their exits.
On our way back to the centre we then followed a boardwalk which goes round the burrows where we could see them all settling for the night. Instead of going to bed though after a long day or even weeks out at sea and a very stressful fun out of the ocean to safety they just stand around and chat to each other! We even had the pleasure of walking up the hill with 3 of the little things as they slowly waddled round and occasionally stopped to have a look around. It was fantastic! Unfortunatley though taking photos was banned we we couldn't get a picture of it, we definatley won't forget it though!
