We packd our bags and walked down the beach to White Sandy and booked in for what we genuinely thought would be 1 maybe 2 nights. We never expected that we would end up staying 10 nights! It was basically perfect from day one.
We were shown to our room by Lari, who took a keen interest in us from the beginning mainly because we were from near Manchester and he is a huge Oasis fan.
The first couple of nights were great, we spent time on the beach and in the sea as well as plenty of time lieing in hammocks. We started to get to know a few of the staff on a first name basis and got a real feel for the place. Some of the other guests were actually saying that it was like we were part of their family!
Every Thursday morning the staff organise a day out and we were taken on a boat to a beautiful white sandy beach where we had a picnic. The picnic was great - we all got dropped off by the boat then the Fiji Guys went out spear fishing and brought back our lunch where all the fish were gutted and cleaned and then thrown onto a hot plate - it doesn't get fresher than that! On Fridays they also have Fiji night, where they cook all traditional food using hot rocks underground - again this was delicious!
The evening entertainment every night is great fun. We learnt and performed the Bula dance every night, eventually being asked to perform it properly with the staff to the new guests! This was then followed by games that we haven't played for a loooong time like musical statues, musical numbers and limbo!
We also met some great people over our first couple of days who all seemed to come and go. On Sunday we went to church of all places! It was an interesting experience and we got welcomed by the locals greatly. On Sunday afternoon Lari, who was now one of our best friends, offered to take us spear fishing over on Honeymoon beach on the other side of the island. It was an experience that we wont forget, watching him sink metres down underwater for what seemed like minutes as he stalked his fish and fired his metal spear into them. Once caught he would then bite their heads to kill them before passing them to Dave to string up!
It was also on Sunday when we met Andy and Paul. They had arrived at White Sandy and planned to stay for 6 nights. They are both from Brighton and like ourselves coming to the end of a larger trip. We got on with them both really well and they also clicked with the staff straight away so the week to follow is probably going to be the most memorable week we have had this trip. All of us, even all the staff, just relaxing, playing games and getting to know everyone more.
We had another picnic on the Thursday and our last night was another Fiji night. On this night we introduced them to musical chairs. This may have been a mistake as these guys take their party games very seriously! How nobody got hurt as they were all diving round and rugby tackling each other to get the last chair is a mystery!
Andy was also a semi professional Magician and could do things with a pack of cards that was truly out of this world. So now every night after the party games Andy would show everyone a few tricks! He did some really cool stuff including shaking an empty/crushed can of pop that he would find in the bin. Then right in front of our eyes it would turn into a new can that he would then proceed to open and drink! The best bit wasn't the magic though it was the look on all the Fijians faces who had never seen anything like this before in their lives!
On our last morning, a group of us were leaving together including us and Andy and Paul. It was really upsetting to say goodbye to them all, and everyone was really cut up especially Lari, Scoby and Sally who really didn't want us to leave. The last 10 days spent at White Sandy Beach Resort have probably been the best 10 days of our entire trip. We have never met such a wonderful set of people who we will never forget and have promised ourselves that one day we will definatley see them again. Scobi and his father are opening up their own resort in the near future with all the White Sandy Staff working there so we have promised to go back - better start saving!!
