C's Up.....
So we only stayed 2 nights in Wellington as we needed to work!! We went to the Te Papa Museum as it is the National museum and its free!!! We only spent about an hour in there, not really our scene!!! So JB went off to watch the cricket that was being played, New Zealand against India. I didnt fancy that as it was a test match, bit too boring for me, so off i went to watch some local colts rugby at the local park, saw one team absolutley anialate the other team about 80 - 5! Better than cricket though!! haha! We went out that night for a curry and to watch the Chiefs get lucky and just scrape a win! The following day we were off to Hastings to find some work, most probably apple picking. We arrived at about 6pm and the kid behind the desk said "alright boys, your starting work at 7.30am tomorrow!" Gee thanks!!! So at 6.30am the next morning the alarm goes off, massive shock to the system!! When we got to work we had alittle induction of how to pick the apples and what not to do!! I think by the end of the week we'd done pretty much everything we were told not to and probably a lot more!!! There was 6 of us starting from the hostel, another English an italian and 2 french. (The Italian got sacked on the 2nd day for brusing to much of the fruit!!) We were put into a group with 13 Samoans! It was actually really good and they were well nice people, we even learnt a bit of Samaon by the end of the week, and one of the older guys gave us his address and said we were welcome to come and "find" him in Samoa if we ever visited. So we spent the week, learning Samoan, making up games involving apples (cricket, rounders and mini apple to name but a few!!) and also having many apple fights with each other, mainly from the top of our 10ft ladders, a couple of head shots were landed but if your going to throw apples what do you expect! So their was only 2 weeks left of the season and we had been told the Kiwi one was just starting, so we took the risk of only doing a weeks apple picking and the leaving on the Sunday to get up near the Kiwi's, but we thought it would of been rude not to put some money back into the lovely and thriving area (naaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!) of Hastings so we went out for a big easter session! The hostel was having a easter party, but we wanted to watcht he rugby so off we went to the pub, 3 games of super 14's, many many pints of bulmers and speights, a 'Bikini Jam' (Yes it did involve girls in bikinis, but no it didnt involve jam!!) contest later we were back at the hostel after having a great night, the 2 lads from our room were still up and said the party had been garbage so as always we had made the best choice!!! So off we went to the bay of plenty, hoping that there would be 'plenty' of work! We again arrived late at night, but early next morning we were out looking for a job, one job center gave us a list of kiwi fruit packhouses to try, so JB started calling whilst I made the toasted sandwiches!! Not much luck was being had, everywhere was not recruiting or needed your own transport, and......the cheese had melted everywhere in the sandwich maker!!! Luckily the main problem was solved, and the sandiwches were ready! JB had made about 15 calls to no luck and after a short sandwich break I had a little go, took a couple of rejections early doors but then got lucky, one company, the last one on the list had a some work avaliable, in a packhouse, and with work unitl the middle of June roughly, sounded great, so the next day we were off to Te Puke, the Kiwi fruit capital of the world, we went to the office filled out the forms and had finally found some work, Induction on Friday followed by the real deal starting monday morning!! That weekend was JB's 21st, we've done a special blog for that!
So thats all for now folks,
Hope everyone is well
Take it easy......
C and JB
