Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
The morning started with a river raft trip down the urubamba river. It was more like a float trip and was a totally perspective of the mountains. You can see the terraces that the incas built to turn the mountainsides into arable land that fed their civilization and is use today. From there we went to Ollantaytambo, ancient fortress that guarded the temples with the town below. (We climbed 250 steps.). It is almost unbelievable that they could have carried the huge stone, perfectly fit them together and no mortar. We saw the protuberances that were used to hoist the stone up the mountains. Also saw stone in the rock walls that were used like steps to climb the walls. We then went to our home hosted lunch where we made the specialty of Peru, cuy, or Guinea pig. Our group participated in the catching, and then preparation of the Guinea pig. Not sure what to do with pictures I took. For lunch we were served delicious finger potato soup, lupin over rice and kind of potato lasagne. Guinea pig was served. I found it to be crispy skin, tender meat and very salty. We visited a local pottery place of the artist seminario who has pottery and wall hangings in many museum. Diner was local Peruvian chicken. Tomorrow we got to Machu Picchu.
