Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Last night we experienced a 4.8 earthquake. The room and the beds swayed as well as the chandelier. Our first earthquake! We started the day with a walking tour of the lower part of ollantaytambo where the town is laid out as the incas designed it. People still live there and continue to practice some of the old inca ways, especially the way they live in their houses. After our town visit we took the train to Machu Picchu, an old single track train. The tracks follow the urubamba. River the whole way. It was amazing to see how the scenery went from dry mountains to plush greenery. Once at the station we took a 30 minute bus ride on a switchback road. After our arrival our tour started with our guide showing us Machu Picchu, both the upper part which was more imperial to the lower part which had three temples and work houses. It is awe inspiring to see how they built Machu Picchu every stone cut and laid to perfection, how they were able to build rooms that allowed light in from the winter solstice to a rock that carved shape is that of the mountain behind it. But for the most mystical moment was the sun coming out, clouds in front of the mountains and a double rainbow, one full, appearing over Machu Picchu. There really aren't words to describe what we saw. This should definitely be on everyone's bucket list.
