Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Today we visited the Curonian Spit, a unesco site. A sand dune peninsula shared by Russia and Lithuania. We took a ferry to the Nida peninsula and walked the beach on the Baltic Sea looking for Amber. We didn't really find any Amber but walking on a Baltic Sea beach was neat. We then walked through a forested area known as the Hill of Witches. There are about 80 wooden tree structures depicting Lithuanian fairy tales. Our guide,Vita, told us some of the fairy tales. On the downward slope there are Devils and witches, both good and bad. The gates is hell are also depicted. After lunch we went to the view of the Lithuanian lagoon and Russian Baltic Sea and sand dunes. The Lithuanians built their own gas terminal so they can be independent of,Russia. They also dredged the lagoon so they have an open unfrozen port during the winter. Our last stop was to our guides apartment to see how people live. It was like visiting our children's apartment/homes. It was cute. She served apple cheese which was very good. Tomorrow we make our way to Riga after a few more stops in Lithuania. We have been very impressed with this country. Makes us realize how important it is to visit other countries to see how people live and hear their history.
