After finishing our road trip along the Great Ocean Road we had a long day of driving ahead of us as we went straight on up to Adelaide. We set off early from Port Fairy and after a couple of hours we stopped for a coffee in Mount Gambier, just over the border into South Australia. While we were there we checked out the 2 main attraction:, the Umpherston Sinkhole, which is a huge limestone sinkhole that was turned into an English garden in the 1800s - we went all the way down to the bottom! - and the Blue Lake, which is the brightest shade of blue we have ever seen a lake! Apparently some microbes turn the water bright blue during the summer, so we had picked a good time to visit. After our brief stop we carried on straight up to Adelaide, and got to our hostel in Port Adelaide 15km outside of the city centre. We'd had a long day of travelling so we didn't do very much on our first night, but we did go for a walk by the river and spotted some of the Port River dolphins who live around the area! The next day we decided to take it easy after all our driving, so we just explored the Port Adelaide area. We walked around the docks, and also climbed all the way to the top of the lighthouse, which had some pretty nice views over the river and all the way into the city centre. In the afternoon we did quite a long walk, called the loop walk, around the area and ended up walking all the way to Semaphore beach - it was quite nice, but very windy, so we didn't stop for long. The area we are staying in is quite an industrial area, but there are places along the river that are really nice. The next day we took a bus into the city centre to explore. We started by visiting the Central Market, which had loads of interesting stalls and some nice places to eat, and we then walked to Victoria Square - we couldn't see much of it though as the whole area was taken up with marquees for the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Our next stop was the Rundle Street Mall where we picked up some souvenirs, and which also had some pretty cool street art like golden pigs climbing into rubbish bins and statues climbing the walls of buildings! We then went to have a look around the South Australian Museum, mainly to make use of the air conditioning, but it did have some very interesting exhibits on Aboriginal culture as well as loads of artefacts from different Pacific islands. After that we went for a nice walk along the Torrens River, which is in a nice area of parkland just outside of the city centre. Adelaide is much quieter than Melbourne and even Hobart, so it's a bit weird to be walking around a city that feels so empty! The next day we decided to do the Port River Dolphin Trail, so we headed off to our first stop of Garden Island where we immediately spotted a group of 4 or 5 dolphins fishing and playing about 20 metres away from where we were standing! Unfortunately we didn't spot any more dolphins in our next 4 stops, but we did have a nice drive along the coast to places like Largs Bay and North Haven Marina. Yesterday we headed up into the Adelaide Hills, which our guide books informed us are always a few degrees cooler than the city. We stopped off at Hahnforf, the oldest surviving German village in Australia. It's a really quaint place full of European style buildings, souvenir shops and cafes - we had delicious pizza followed by homemade ice cream, perfect for a 33+ degree day! We then drove to the summit of Mount Lofty, which had great views over the city and the surrounding area. We also saw another koala sleeping in a tree by the footpath, this one was quie low down the tree and we could have touched it if we wanted to! We now have a couple of days left in Adelaide so we are making use of the free wifi in the hostel (I've submitted an application for an internship for when we get home so fingers crossed!) and sorting everything out for our trip up to Darwin. We are taking a 3 day train ride across the Outback to get there, with stops in Alice Springs and Katherine on the way, which should be awesome - Joel is especially looking forward to it as it means no more driving for him for a while!
