Celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary with a romantic getaway to a bed and breakfast in Shipshewana, Indiana. It's Amish country that features horse and buggy rides, authentic Amish Farmhouse dinners with an actual Amish family in their home, shopping, handmade furniture stores, fantastic baked goods and crafts.
Day 1: Tuesday, Oct. 21 - We drove the scenic route down Michigan Ave., stopping for lunch in a small town bar/restaurant for craft beers and horseradish/garlic burgers - amazing. Took us about 4 hours to arrive in Shipshewana, IN. We hit the welcome center for brochures and maps and did a little shopping. Then on to our Bed and Breakfast in Middlebury, IN (about 15 minutes from town).
The place is named: The McKenzie House!

The inn keepers were out of town, so we had the whole place to ourselves, no other guests were staying in the main house so they left us a hidden key. We booked Nicolle's Suite, which ended up being the whole 3rd floor with 3 bedrooms, kitchenette, fireplace, custom tiled bathroom, balcony and sitting room. So cozy and large!
We carried in our bags then toured the whole house. We ventured to the finished basement/den/family room where we played darts while making popcorn in a carnival style popcorn machine. Borrowed 3 movies from their extensive DVD library and stocked up on some complimentary Keurig coffees, hot cocoas, and fancy teas to sip on the next few days. Plenty of snack chips and candy were available as well. Back upstairs we marched for movies, popcorn and R&R.
Day 2: Wednesday, Oct. 22 - Got up early @ 7am. A friend/neighbor of the innkeepers prepared breakfast for us and 2 other guests who were staying in the Barn BnB across the driveway. Scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, muffins, pastries and yogurt. Coffee and juice of course. Back upstairs to freshen up and get ready for a day on the town.
We did the horse and carraige ride, took a tour of a dairy farm, had a full dinner and dessert at an Amish Farmhouse, did some shopping in town, hitting many shops on mainstreet. Back to the BnB when the sun went down, after first stopping for adult beverage supplies. That night we watched movies, ate snacks and cheeses, sipped cocktails, lit the fireplace, then off to bed by 11pm. Very relaxing and romantic.
Day 3: Thursday, Oct. 23 - The innkeepers returned at 2am that morning from their Ohio trip (they went to see their new grand-daughter). They made an amazing breakfast with all kinds of fancy breakfast foods. Another couple had arrived last night as well, so the six of us all sat around chatting, while admiring the decor and craftsmanship of this lovely house. The wife's previous profession had been Interior Decorator and it sure showed.
Chuck and I packed up and headed out at 11am to see the town one last time. We slowly drove home taking back roads and hit 6 antique stores/shops along the way. It was such a nice and relaxing getaway and one we plan to take again.
