So... my VPN sucks! The Great Firewall of China means I cannot access anything google related which unfortunately because these blogs use google maps means I can't publish blogs until my VPN finally works or am out of China! But anyway... Zhangjiajie! My second day in Zhangjiajie far outclassed the first. There was much less hiking up steep mountain sides (although still a fair bit of it) and yet much more spectacular surreal scenery. I started on the Golden Whip Trail, a flat trail, that was only slightly busy. The trail tracks the bottom of the valley and so you are surrounded from above the awe inspiring peaks in all their shapes and sizes. I then climbed up to the main viewpoint area. The climb was quite nice but the viewpoints were among the most overcrowded places I've ever visited. Further, the worst of Chinese etiquette was on show with kids literally peeing in the middle of the paths and old people spitting everywhere. Plus all the food was a rip off. But none of that could get in the way of the awe inspiring views, though enjoying these was 20million times easier in the less crowded spots. I then took one of the park buses in the complete wrong direction. This ended up going spectacularly well. At the end was the hardest bit of hiking I did, but the view of the 'Man praying to Buddha' was simply awe inspiring, especially given I was lucky enough to appreciate it with no one around. I got saved an arduous hike back to the bus stop by a stall lady showing me a shortcut. I then got very confused with the whole bus system and ended up doing a complete loop. Basically, I hitched onto a bus going in the right direction but the wrong place and it turned out none of the buses were going to where I needed to go. So I ended up going back to where I began and basically did the morning trek again in reverse. Not that was really a problem. Apart from losing my cap... Ciao!
