I made my way out of the gringo trap of Huacachina (But not before a banana pancake breakfast) on a tuk tuk to the neighboring city of Ica.
Ica is as monstrous as Lima. An earthquake flattened it 10 years ago and it's still recovering. It's a dodgy place heaving with traffic and stray dogs. Once I got to the centre I tried to get a taxi to the Bodega Tacama. The 1st taxi I came across had no idea what I was on about but luckily the 2nd had heard of this place.
Bodega Tacama is in fact the 1st vineyard in South America. It's an impressive place, once a monastery now converted into Peru's premier vineyard. It may be odd to have a vineyard in the desert. But the desert protects it from disease and there's plentiful water from the Andean rivers.
Whilst it was a bit nippy the tour was great, seeing the production process of the wine and pisco - Peru's national drink. Peru, unsurprisingly, keeps most of the wine it produces, largely because Peruvians have a taste for young, sweet wine unlike most of the world. Still, it was nice to stumble across something a bit unexpected, as well as get to try some wine (at 10am...) all for 3usd. And it was private!
Now it's the journey back to Lima back up the coast before flying up to the Andes tomorrow!
