It's not been a great day. I've been a bit bored and sleepy again. I've swapped bad hostels with good beds for good hostels with bad beds so its probably an early night tonight!
I haven't done an awful lot. To be honest I didn't really plan my time here in Rishikesh spectacularly well. All the yoga retreats etc are a bit expensive or don't really do 'drop-in' courses. It feels a bit of a shame to come to the home of yoga and not try it out. Mind you, I could do with some meditation so maybe I will try that out.
Rishikesh is a bizarre place. I walked around the Swarg Ashram area of the town. It's basically a stream of saris, and very sick old people/Hindu babas and sadhus who seem to spend most of their time lying around effectively homeless. I'm unsure if the root cause is religious affiliation or poverty but most likely both. Afterall, I feel few genuinely rich Hindus would want to live a life lying in the sand of a beach on the Ganges.
I've spent a good portion of the day doing R, getting nowhere with a bunch of code for my dissertation. Never good to do work on holiday but I thought I would be able to find somewhere to drop in and do a yoga session or similar today, like I did in Guatemala.
To be honest, India, whilst I'm glad I came (and also given the size of this country I'm basing off a very small sample!) I feel is a bit overrated. Unless you thrive of the chaos of cows motorbikes and angry fat people spitting everywhere, I feel it's a bit of letdown. Sure some sights are massive wows but others are a bit, underwhelming. Maybe I'm just tired and frustrated with R. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered with Rishikesh but I struggle to think of a compelling reason really why anywhere nearby would be better. Agra has the Taj Mahal, but have also heard Agra as a city is diabolical.
Anyway, hopefully can catch the last of the sunset from the rooftop and grab some dinner before an early night!
