Today hasn't been a disaster. I still have both my kidneys. But it hasn't gone terribly well.
I spent slightly too long in breakfast conversation with a South Carolinan going to an ashram in Jaipur and so by the time I made it to the New Delhi Railway Station metro it was already 10am. The time my street kid tour left...
I got an overpriced tuk tuk to the 'reservation office' to find out for sure that the tour had already left. At least it wasn't prepaid but it was a big shame as I had been looking forward to it.
So I was stuck in dingy Paharganj not really sure what on Earth to do with myself. I wandered towards the main train station where I was accosted by someone who a) was actually helpful and b) didn't want to be tipped for giving help to a tourist.
Before I knew it I had agreed to a 10rupee tuk-tuk ride to the Government tourist office. Of course, it could have not been the government tourist office and just a ruse. But then again it was marked on a map as such. The upshot is that I've got myself a bus ticket to Dharamshala for this evening on a tourist sleeper bus. Think I better take this as the bus I had in mind turns out to be a local bus which may not be a brilliant idea given mountain roads and monsoon don't match.
So yeah, I then didn't really feel like doing much and so I've made it back to the hostel. Delhi is a city that's quite hard to navigate and am really glad am staying away from the Paharganj Connaught Place area. That's the really touristy bit of the city and within minutes of leaving the tourist office I got accosted by a druggy Russian wishing praise upon the UK and wanting me to follow him to his tourist office, and a gaggle of aggressive tuk-tuk drivers.
I'm now back in the hostel, hoping my sleepiness will help me get to sleep on the sleeper bus north tonight. Am very glad to be leaving Delhi! Let's hope the next stage of the journey is a bit smoother!!
Alavida!
