Christinas travels!
Well unfortunately I have no photographic evidence of me standing up on the wave but you will have to believe me when I say I stayed up for a good 10 seconds - the camera could not come out with me! Some of you will find that very hard to believe knowing that my co-ordination skills are not normally the best but with a board this big it was achievable. The surf instructors (who were very hunky!) tow you on the back of their board across the bay to where the waves are an an ideal level for beginners and then they give you a push onto the wave and off you go. So after a 10 minute quick lesson on how to stand up you are let loose and I actually stayed up on my first go to the surprise of myself and the guys.... The company do guarantee by the end of the session you will be standing up surfing or you get your money back so it was worth a go. The board is just foam so you dont injury yourself but it was still really good. I dont quite think I am ready to surf at surfers paradise in the rough waves but it was good to give it a go at Bryon Bay and if I was here longer I would probably go for more lessons.
My next stop was actually at surfers paradise but I only stayed there for 1 night - I have felt very old here as when you go out it is full of very young people hitting the high rise buildings looking to party. I did go out as they had an organised tour in the place I was staying and they insisted I took ID with me as they said I would get asked for ID to get in any pubs and clubs. And they were right - I did actually get asked by one place which was quite a compliment to check that I was actually over 18 although they probably ask everyone ..
After Surfers I stayed for 3 nights at Noosa which is a really pretty trendy town near to Brisbane. It is full of homes worth millions of pounds as you will see from some of the photos.
From Noosa I then went on the 3 day safari tour to Fraser Island. It is awesome as the australians would say - you are only allowed on the island in a 4x4 jeep or on an organised tour truck as the chances are you will get stuck in the sand... Our driver Mike drove us along the beach which was really good fun and you could drive for 75 miles along the beach right along the island if you really wanted to. I was tempted to do the self-drive option which was cheaper and you get together with fellow travellers and a map and make your on way around the island but in the end I went with a organised tour and driver. Having now been there Im glad I did this option as so many of the self-drive jeeps were stuck in the sand where the English drivers werent used to driving in these conditions and it wouldnt have been much fun constantly being stuck and missing out on seeing the stunning surroundings. It was interesting to see all the various sites and all the rainforest were built up on the sands which was unusual to see as there was no soil in site.
The ocean looked so inviting but we had strict instructions not to go anywhere near it to swim or even paddle as there are sharks lurking and we actually saw some from one of the viewpoints. With the lakes and sand etc being so nice though we had lots of other things to occupy ourselves with.
