First blog post! Im writing it in notepad as this computers IE will randomly shut down so here goes..
Beth and I headed down to the beach today. Our hostel has an ocean view. BUT thick thick sea mist right now so wasnt of a vista! We have pronounced the beach officially rubbish and much preffered
a suburb that we found where they obviously spend a small fortune on landscape gardening. We are naming Lima the city of lurve because there are couples everywhere - parks, beach, plazas. Our hostel
owner has just told me that theyre getting some privacy as Peruvian woman all live with parents until they marry. Apparantely in the poorer parts there are hostels for the locals for exactly this
reason. Tut tut - ha ha.
Getting here was a long journey. Long long long. Iberia, (much like my foe, Monarch) as an airline, sucks the big one. The stewardesses were very scary and very lazy!! You wanted something - you
got it yourself! Beth got scolded for using the toilet at the wrong end of the plane. So to summise - Iberia are rubbish. But no delays - no problems - our hostel collected us from the airport with a
sign saying Beth Waffling - which incidently is not her name but quite funny.
We came out of the airport into a nice level of humidity I would say, climbed into our taxi and then got our first experience of the roads in Peru. They use their horn rather than their mirrors,
no stopping for red lights (dont be silly!!) and there arent lanes at junctions just however many cars can cram into the space. Love it. But glad Im not driving!
So I lock myself into the back of the taxi (you never know) and we stop at a petrol station. Im thinking - here we go... So the driver gets out, reaches into the front window unlocks my door and
asks us to get out. Im thinking here we go - game over - bye bye world - but no - it would seem we just couldnt be in the car while they filled the tank. The gas stations are cool, they have
attendants in jumpsuits (mainly women actually) that give you a coke and a anack while you wait. Still wasnt what I wanted to be doing whilst clutching my tourists wallet though..
Our hostel is booked out - I can understand why as its very nice, very chilled so I think Ill go now try find our next place so that we have somewhere to stay tomorrow night. Weve met lots of nice
fellow tourists at this hostel - no british mind you - but americans, canadians, austrailians. Will possibly be sociable tonight and go for a beer or two. The Aussie girl has been on the road for two
years and tonight is her last night so would be nice to give her a send off.
Now I know its irritating when travellers do nothing but write down what they eat all day but you know me - I like to eat and I like to talk about eating so TOUGH. Our first meal (other than
breakfast which was continental so doesnt count) was cerviche which is white fish seared in lemon juice and coriander for starters and paella with calemari and mussels - huge - as a main. Really good
- Im happy. The waiter came over all shy to tell us we were beautiful. Yesterday I travelled for 23 hours. I am definately not looking beautiful!!
Hasta Luego..
