We might even come back....
We arrived quite late so were more than happy to take the first decent enough looking place that came up. First night we didn't really do anything apart from wander around trying to get our bearings & fail miserably! Oh and we went to their equivalent of Pizza Hut & had our most expensive meal so far ($8).
On our first day we went to Tol Sleung which used to be a school, but was turned into a prison (called S21) by the Khmer Rouge. Lots of very disturbing stories about what they used to do to people there.
We tried to go to the royal palace but they wouldn't let Emma in for showing too much skin - told her the thong bikini was a bad idea.
So we got a our Tuk Tuk driver to take us to the Killing Fields. This is where most of the prisoners from S21 were taken to be executed & a strangely peaceful place. We had seen pictures in the museum of what it looked like when first discovered, with piles & piles of bones lining the edges of mass graves. When we got there it was very different, the graves were all marked & some them had brief details on what was found there (450 men aged 30 - 40 etc....). They have a huge monument with many of the skulls in, grouped by age & sex.
After that we tried to liven the mood & had another go at getting into the palace. It started raining, so the marble steps were a touch slippy & naturally i was very cautious on the way down in my hand made leather flip flops. Until I got to the bottom step that is. I got a little over confident & proceeded to do the best cartoon style fall the world has ever seen. Thank fully no one was taking a picture at the time!!
