Day 3 - 'The big sleep'!! After the long journey getting here and then having most of another full day awake - it was always going to happen. Finally managed to get out of the room at midday despite hoping to make it down for breakfast by 10:30am!
With breakfast a no goer, we set off from the hotel on the boat and then onto the sky train to visit Jim Thompson's house. Jim was an American who settled in Bangkok in the 20th century. He single handedly reinvented the silk trade in Thailand after it had nearly all but disappeared. He built a house in Bangkok in a typical Thai style and it is now a show home and a museum to his work. We had an English speaking tour around the house and grounds.
After the tour we went to the restaurant for some lunch and what was the first meal of the day at about 14:30. Jumping back on the sky train and then the boat again to the hotel for a bit of relaxation around the pool. Getting rid of the pale white body was out of the question though as the clouds continued to cover the sky. Still took a dip in the pool and it was nice to chill out and look over the river and watch the chaotic nature of the boats going up and down constantly.
After a shower and freshen up we decided to go to Asiatique which is a night market down river. To get there we had to take the hotel boat up river and then jump on another boat to get us back down river beyond our hotel. At Asiatique there is a maze of stalls selling anything you could think of, most if it fake though except one section. Amongst the stalls are restaurants again selling all types of food from French to Japenese. During our walk about the heavens decided to open so our eatery options were limited based on some of the better looking places being outside overlooking the river. We found a nice restaurant selling Thai and Vietnamese food which was packed, which is a good sign! Grabbing a table for 2.......outside but under a canopy we ordered a couple of beers and some food. The waiter asked me if I wanted my meal medium or spicy to which I thought medium can't be too bad, lets just say if that is how hot the medium is, I think the spicy would have left me breathing fire out of both ends!!
A quick walk around the stalls again looking for some flip flops for Alice whose current ones don't like the rain as discovered by her aquaplaning across a couple of the walkways!
Back into the boat and back to the central pier, past our hotel and then into the hotel boat to drop us at the door. A quick drink downstairs and then off to bed to hopefully get rid of the rest of the jet lag.
Lying in bed watching the world news brings us great joy telling us there is a super typhoon on its way towards Laos and Vietnam!! Watch this space!
