Day 19 - 'Alice's Birthday'. No temples today as we have a 15:00 flight down to the south coast so a nice chilled out morning with a late breakfast. Ventured out to try and find one of these t-shirts that only seem to be sized for dwarfs, again no luck. Did try on a large which required help to get off again! We did go back to the picture gallery we had been to a couple of nights ago and purchased a couple of really nice prints for the house. Just hope we can get them home safely. Dodged the tuk tuk drivers and restaurant workers to get back to the hotel. Checked out and relaxed in the chill out area for a while whilst the heavens opened a couple of times. Just as we were grabbing our bags, once again another heavy shower but luckily blew over before we'd even got to the tuk tuk. Was needed as it was sweltering in the morning.
Sam picked us up again and we set off for the airport some 15 minutes out of town. A quick photo with the great man and into what was a very small domestic terminal, not what we were expecting. Short queue to check in and then through to departures to wait for an hour or so. Grabbed a spot of lunch at our new favourite cafe - Blue Pumpkin - which seems to have outlets everywhere. There was what looked like a private jet outside the terminal so here was hoping! No luck as a small propellor plane flew in and stopped at our gate. On we hopped and made the short trip down to Sihanoukville with only a small muffin and a cup of water for a snack. To be honest though by the time we'd got up high enough to allow the steward to get up, he only had about 5 minutes to serve everyone before having to sit down again for landing.
Once at the airport, we grabbed our bags and were greeted by a taxi man with our name on. About a 30 minute journey to the hotel, the Tamu which is right on the seafront. Bit random but the taxi driver stopped about halfway and picked someone else up who we think worked at the hotel.
The hotel, wow! Right on the beach and looks like paradise. A lovely room right by the pool with some birthday flowers on the bed for the b'day girl, secretly arranged with the manager. A quick drop of the bags and down to the beach as we had about an hour until sunset. The restaurant is between the hotel and the beach with the best thing being that no shoes or flip flops are required as everywhere is sand, including all the way up to the room. Headed back to the room as we decided to go for a swim and we lazed around in the shallows watching the sunset and actually the water was like a bath.
The place looked amazing as the light faded so we grabbed a drink on the beach before heading back to get showered for dinner. Dinner in the seafront restaurant where I had the fish of the day, barracuda and Alice some lovely chicken teriyaki skewers. All this washed down with a nice bottle of wine as a birthday treat. Looking forward to lazing on the beach tomorrow just a shame we have to leave in the afternoon for Kampot, would have been great to have a couple of days here but definitely would have blown our budget!
