Getting to Prague:
On Monday, I arrived at the bus station in Vienna to catch my bus to Prague. I was about an hour early, so I sat in the waiting area. There was a TV there showing coverage of flooding. Once I realised that the headline was from Czech Republic I got a bit nervous!
There was wifi on the bus, so I emailed the hostel owner asking how bad the flooding was in Prague, and he assured me that all was fine - the hostel was still open and accessible and all the attractions were still open.
Crisis averted!
Around 5:00pm, I arrived in Prague. The metro was closed due to the flooding, so there were replacement busses running. Getting onto a bus at rush hour with luggage is not an easy feat. I was finally able to squeeze onto the fourth bus that went by.
I arrived at the hostel, where I met some nice girls from New Zealand who were staying in my room. We had dinner together at the Hostel restaurant. I had a nice meal, made better by the fact that they serve half litre beers for 40 crowns (or $2).
After dinner, I had a relaxing night.
Day 1:
Yesterday, I had a leisurely morning then headed into town around noon. At 2:00, I did a free walking tour of the city. The tour was amazing! It was three hours long, and the guide was so fun and knowledgeable that the time just flew by. I learned a lot about the city, especially about WWII and communism.
I really love Prague! The terracotta roofs and colourful buildings are so beautiful. The cobblestone winding streets really make you feel transported in time. I was so mesmerized by the city that I forgot to take pictures! I only took about 50 yesterday, which is very low for me.
The guide let us know that he was leading a beer tour that night. I thought it sounded interesting, so I participated in that. We started at a bar called "the beer museum" where we did a tasting of 5 Czech beers. It was hard to choose 5 because they have so many choices! We learned how to properly taste beer (there are five steps - look, smell, taste, feel, and impression).
Afterwards, we went to three more pubs were we had a half litre at each. We learned the 8 and half rules of Czech cheering, and some fun facts about beer and Czechs - such as the Czech Republic is the 2nd in the world for alcohol consumption per capita.
Overall, a great first day!
