So we have been super busy the last five days, exploring Berlin and then driving on the autobahn to Dresden to visit the old town and then on to the craziness of Munich at Oktoberfest time!
In Berlin our days started with a gourmet German-style buffet brekky at the courtyard Marriott - instant love! We then went on walking around the city to check out out heaps of amazing sights including the Berliner Dom - a beautiful church inside and out, which you can also walk up a million tiny stairs to the top of and which you are rewarded with an amazing view over Berlin city! We also went to see Brandenburg gate (which I kept wanting to call a bridge), whats left of the berlin Wall (there was a really awesome historical installation here too), "Checkpoint Charlie", the place where hitlers bunker used to be and what it used to look like, the Holocaust memorial, Reichstag, and everything in between! Our feet were so sore after doing this much walking!! And my shoes have kind of died already too :P
From Berlin we picked up our totally sexy BMW M6 convertible which was just perfect for the autobahn drive to Dresden! This car just loved cruising around 160km and tearing it up to 200 every now and then for fun too - makes you realise how we couldn't really appreciate having a car like that in Australia without the autobahn to go with it! Also felt so much more satisfied and much less bored on the road compared with the drives back home... Hmmmm...
Next we stop for lunch in Dresden at the beautiful aldstadt - so many amazing old buildings, and the best food we've had on our trip so far!
From there we made REALLY good time on the road to Munich, dropping the car off (with great sadness), and getting into Munich in time to have a little sneak peek of Oktoberfest - SO MANY DRUNK PEOPLE!!! But all having a great time! As it was about 8pm by then we felt like we'd arrived at the party a bit late, and underdressed as everyone else had fully sick costumes, so we decided to get some outfits in the morning and make an early start on oktoberfest the next day. Shopping in Munich is mega cool - so many funky shoe shops! We stuck to the traditional outfit shopping though which was quite a hilarious experience... Turns out Gav REALLY suits the lederhosen!
And I know you're waiting for this - Oktoberfest IS awesome! It's kinda like a massive ekka sideshow alley but with no massive entry fee and with big tents overflowing with delicious, cheap (for us - apparently not cheap for europeans) 1L steins served to your table... A little piece of unhealthy heaven! Things were getting pretty crazy in the beer halls and Gav and I actually managed to get separated from one another which caused a massive panic for both of us, especially when we both ended up going in the wrong direction (probably opposite directions from each other too), and took ages to find our ways back to the apartment. To add to the debacle Gav was also in possession of my phone, money, passport, everything! All worked out in the end... And we can definitely say Oktoberfest is CRAZY! But awesome! The next morning, not so awesome... We both felt pretty hungover, and as we'd run out of our Aussie supply of Panadol it meant a bit of wandering around trying to find where we could get some - Aldi failed us, so did another shop which kinda looks like Priceline, but after a bit more wandering the Panadol was found! So then we packed, had brekky and dragged our sorry heads to the plane to Bristol.
Hello Kindread!!! For the next few days we'll be staying in Atworth and travelling around to various pubs to play the first bunch of shows... What a beautiful area, with crazy winding narrow streets, stone houses covered in vines and some gorgeous views of a vast country landscape. We kicked off the reunion last night with some local ale and delicious, cheap curry :D Today Kindread will have a jam to get our funkiness flowing again and then tonight we play Queen's Head pub in Box - which is apparently frequented by famous musos and is around the corner from Peter Gabriel's studio - wow!
We do have wifi for the next few days so can keep in touch a bit more Yay! :)
Amongst the crazy busyness we are also thinking of everyone back home and hoping everyone is keeping well and taking care - we miss you!
Until the next blog post...
Lots of love - Chel and Gav xx
