Wed 15th October
Woke up and went for breakfast accross the road from our hotel before catching the mini bus to Kanchanaburi. After the 2 hour journey we arrived and checked into our lodge (bungalows raised above the river Kwai) - the first bungalow we were given we watched a green snake slither up the steps, onto the outdoor chair and find a whole in the wall and then enter into the room! Luckily the lady politely gave us another room that was spare, and gave it a throrough check....no snakes!
Decided to get our bearings and take a walk around the town to see what Kanchanaburi has to offer. We are staying on a nice street with lots of other guest houses and plenty of bars to choose from - which we checked out later in the evening after heading to the night market which is about 5 minutes away. It was very busy with lots of stalls, with mainly the locals selling to eachother (unlike Bangkok). Grabbed ourselves some dinner off one of the street venders, only costing 25 baht for the two of us (about 50p!).
A few drinks in a bar to finish the night and then bed in our sleeping liners (no sharing with unwanted creatures...including eachother) for an early start to catch the bus to Erawan Waterfalls.
Thurs 16th October
Woke up early to get ready to catch the bus from Kanchanaburi to the Erawan Waterfalls today. Very exciting for me (Curtis) as this was the place I used to dream about and search on google while doing coursework at uni, psyching myself up to go travelling and acting as a great motivator when slogging away at a laptop.
Spent 1.5 hours on a rickety bus (with no spare leg room!) before arriving there. Decided that we would walk straight to the 7th waterfall and work our way down only stopping for a photo opportunity at each on the way up. The place delivered exactly what we were hoping for, and the extremely long (and sweaty) walk up to the top waterfall was well worth the trek! Next to no one there, and the water looking extremely blue and inviting we took the plunge. Was amazing to swim under the falls, and so refreshing! The only thing that we weren't expecting were the fish that like to have a nibble at your feet. Completely harmless though, and were great because they scared off quite a few people as they attempted to dip into the water....hahaha.
Made our way down after that, looking at each fall and stopping off at the third tier for another swim. Although not as picturesque as some of the other waterfalls, this one was so much more fun with the waterfall being much larger and deeper waters. After cooling off for a bit, we made our way back to the bus, just about making it onto the next one before it left.
Went to the internet cafe to back up pictures etc. Ended up spending the entire evening here....just a quick bite grabbing some street food, before heading to a local watering hole to 'rehydrate' ourselves ;).
