Overview of the city June 30-July 3
Took the train from Krakow to Berlin, probably the shortest 8 hours of travel ever. Riding in the bar car with Polish Zotly's to use up is a great way to travel!
We made it into town and caught a quick tour bus to get a feel for the city. Berlin is HUGE! It's a beautiful city with not too many people and lots of parks and a river. Along the river there are these beach chairs set up with restaurants... A very big patio scene here.. Love it.
The other cool thing about Berlin is the mix of architecture all meshed together. There are bits and pieces throughout its history that have remained. The most interesting is the buildings that are done in Soviet style right across the street from either something very old or a street that was in West Berlin. Some of the very old buildings are deceiving how original they were as much was bombed and set on fire during WWII.
We saw most of Berlin between the couple tours we did. We did a hop on hop off tour the first night and saw most of the classic stuff and did a tour on the East Berlin communist stuff the next day. Went to the East memorial and had a few drinks on the river before heading over to a really funky area to have dinner.
The food in Germany was delicious! I had Schnitzel and sausages and sauerkraut only tried one pastry although it's clear pastries are part of this culture. Of course we drank German beer and found this amber colored weizen and an amazing dark beer.
