Week 17- Australia (Phillip Islands) Day 2
We got up at sunrise pretty much this morning and it was bloody freezing! We made a bit of Breakie before hitting the road to Phillip Island. On the way through we stopped at Anglesea go,course we her you can see wild kangaroos and koalas on the golf course. We didn't go in though as you have to pay to play and can't just go in to view the kangaroos, but we managed to see a couple from the van anyway! After that we were back on the road driving through all the little seaside towns along the way. We also stopped off in Torquay which is the nearest place to Melbourne where you can surf! We didn't see any surfers though. Then it webcam on the road again to Phillip Island. We made a few pits tops on the way as it was quite a long drive! We stopped off to get petrol and char got a couple of hash browns from maccy ds and we made sausage sandwiches from the leftover sausages last night!
Took about 4-5 hours to get to Phillip Island. Once we arrived we went into the visitors centre to get a bit more information about the place. We booked our tickets to go and see the penguins that evening. After that we headed to Nobbies which is a place where you can see seals on rocks about 30 ish metres away from the shore. On the way we stopped off at the chocolate factory got a free sample had a look around but we didn't but anything! Nobbies was the other side of the island. Once we got there we had a look around the centre, luckily whilst we were there a woman paid to view the seals on the camera so we managed to have a peak too! There was hundreds of them all on this massive rock! We then went outside had look around and took some photos. Charlotte managed to see some of the seals when she used the zoom on our camera.
There are no free campsites on the Phillip Island, but Brian had given us a car park that him and Maxine had stayed in before so we went to check that out. The car park was right next to the beach so we had some pretty awesome views. We got chatting to a surfer whilst we were there too. We decided to cook our dinner before we headed to see the penguins as it would be pitch black when we got back. Whilst we were eating a man had came to tell us that he had seen a whale from the viewing point and he was bout 15 metres from the saw just resting! We quickly ran to go and check it out. We managed to catch a few glimpses of him and take a few pictures! I was so excited! He was just chilling with the surfers too, pretty cool!
After dinner we headed to the Penguin Parade, they normally start coming in just after dusk when it's becoming dark. They advise you to get here an hour before. We got there and got some seats near the front so we would be able to see them easily as they are very tiny! We waited for just over an hour for them to come in, then all of a sudden one group of them appears and then more and more groups appear. They are less than 30cm tall super tiny!! So cute. Once they make there way in they walk along the broad walk to their homes. Some of them walk a long way! So as we are walking back you can see them really up close. At one point the rangers had to stop the traffic so they could cross the path and get to tenor homes! So cute! We had a hot chocolate to warm us up before we left. The drive back was little scary as it was pitch black! But we got there safely and got settled for the night at about 8 pm! Ha!
