Undeterred by two broken arms, two bruised legs and a sprained shoulder, we got our bus as planned at 7am to Copacabana, next to Lake Titicaca.
We had to get off close to the lake to get over the initial crossing, which the drivers took a very gung ho approach to. With no real direction we managed to figure out that we were to take a small boat over, whilst the bus (with our luggage) sailed over separately on the most precarious looking floating device I've ever seen. We then got on our bus again - which left to carry on for Copacabana without checking everyone was back on, leaving some people behind! They just said they were already running late and couldn't wait for everyone. Unbelievable.
When we got to Copacabana it turned out there was a parade on for a national holiday, so we arrived to find everyone wearing costumes and loads of brass bands playing as they walked through the streets - it felt like we were back at carnival! We watched for a while as we waited for our boat over to Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca.
Isla del Sol is very pretty, it is apparently the biggest island on the lake, which is the largest high altitude lake in the world. It is very isolated and after we'd managed to find a hotel (negotiated with a little boy about 6 years old!) we headed out to walk around the island. It is very steep and they use donkeys all over to help carry all the goods they get from the daily boat arrivals up to the villages, although using a new stone path not the famous 'inca stair' the tourists come for! The steps go up 200m over 1km so it was quite tiring, and we quickly saw why there are so many donkeys!
When we got to the top though we saw why people climb it - the island is beautiful and the views of the lake from the top are incredible. Later we went down for dinner, where the heavens opened and an incredible storm erupted. This was not good at the top of a very steep stone staircase with no streetlights trying to walk down in the pitch black with two broken arms! It took a lot longer to gingerly climb down than it had to walk up...
