Habakkuk 3:19 - The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
Doug Left Sedona and he actually started 2 miles behind where he finished yesterday. But, it was all downhill to his starting point. Once he left Sedona he had to start the arduous climb through the Oak Creek Canyon. It was a long and winding climb so he wanted to start early to beat the traffic. I left about an hour later and I was able to meet him at the top of the canyon. The road from the top of Oak Creek Canyon was much nicer than the climb up. It was wider and had lanes on the side that were easier for bikes. We wanted to arrive in Flagstaff early because Doug's youngest daughter - Christian was helping a college friend who graduated from college to drive her belongings back to California where she lives. They just happened to be passing through Flagstaff on the same day we were so Doug planned lunch with them. The ride to Flagstaff was only forty some miles so we arrived early and went to the KOA campground and set up camp to fill the time while we waited for Christian to arrive.
When they arrived, we did have a very enjoyable lunch! They were excited to tell their stories of their westward Journey and we shared our stories about our eastward adventures. After lunch Doug made sure they had some goodies from our cooler and they were delivering pizza rolls and cookies Mary had made to restock our goodie stash. I think they enjoyed the pizza rolls too, as there were only a half dozen or so left... They did save all of the cookies as they are Doug's Father's Day gift from Mary since he is a long way from home. Even though Mary will join him next week she will not be able to bake cookies then.
After lunch Doug and I toured downtown and took pictures of many of the nostalgic buildings and signs because Flagstaff is a part of the popular Route 66 highway. We stopped by the campground again as we had stopped early and Doug was going to ride a few more miles for the day. He was going to ride to Hank's Trading Post which was about 26 miles. I let him get a head start as I took a short nap in the truck. When I did catch up with Doug he was at the top of a hill that had an elevation of 7256 feet and there was a 6-mile downhill straightaway with a 30-mph tailwind in behind him. The highway was a four-lane divided highway so, I just followed Doug as he flew down the hill. Considering the downhill terrain, not having to avoid debris on the shoulder of the road and the tailwind Doug covered 10 miles in the next 20 minutes. He said it was the most exhilarating ten mile stretch he had ever ridden. I was excited to see him so breathless and excited about the ride on that stretch of highway.
We finished the days ride at Hank's Trading Post and on the way back we stopped at the Sunset Crater National Park. It had many different rocks and trees that I loved to look at (LOL - Lynn picks on me about the rocks and trees. I love the rocks that are in the edge of the yard at Donna Briles house. Lynn thinks I am goofy when I comment on them every time we go to visit.) They estimate the volcano erupted one thousand years ago and changed the landscape in much the same fashion Mt. Saint Helens changed the landscape when it erupted in 1980. There were plains created by the eruption and the filling in of valleys. There are still lava flows that look like the ones in Hawaii right now that have cooled. It was a really interesting park.
We went on back to the campground and it was nice to sit around and type and speak to all of the people as they walked around the part. There was a big 20x50 ft trampoline thingy attached to the ground that rose into a bubble and there were 20+ kids bouncing on it. I have not seen one like that before - it was attached to the ground but about five feet high in the middle. If you fell you rolled to the bottom and just climbed back up the bubble. It looked very safe. We listened to the dog's bark and all of the hustle and bustle of a busy campground and it was so nice. When 9:00 came I was surprised how quiet everything was. Everyone was so respectful of not being noisy. It was a very good cool night for sleeping. God is So Good.
