Hi / Bonjour
09/10/10 In between 3 of the great lakes Oonagh drove us into Canada at Sault ste Marie, She gave the border control officer her best cutie smile and we ended up being individually questioned and the car emptied, Even our dirty washing was aired in public, An hour later we were finally let into the most expensive country on our travels, In Ontario the scenery and the fall gets better and better bathed in autumn sunshine, Drivers use their indicators (No more I guess) or fast food joints as we meandered our way around lake Huron to Parry Sound for the night.
The following day we made it to Niagara falls by early afternoon. The falls are best viewed from the Canadian side and gets the best photo opportunities as you can see the drop of the falls, Boats from either country cruise in close proximity into the mist provided from the spray. Niagara is a gawdy commercialized tourist town milking every Loonie (Canadian for dollar/buck) it can.
Toronto and Thanks giving bank holiday, Toronto is like any other major city the down town populous to our surprise is mainly Indian (not red) and Chinese and not really a sight seeing place.
12/10/10 Ottawa the capital and a student city, .Am I Danish or German, We went to the Canadian genealogy department to find my ancestors, Every census they changed their nationality of origin , we traced back to 1793, So we decided to change plans and head to Nova Scotia to carry on the search, Stopping in Montreal on route, here everything is in French, they have more aloofness than the Parisians on a bad day, The old town has very French look and you can be forgiven for forgetting your in Canada, we were surprised to see a cruise ship moored upon the St Lawrence river full of leaf peekers (local term for fall watchers). We hugged the river as we drove up to Ottawa, A quaint old French city with a huge chateaux turned into administration offices, surrounded by little cobble lanes, Before heading to Nova Scotia and hours of driving through forest after forest interspersed with rivers, lakes, and a over zealous Mountie police officer who wasn't to impressed on 130k in a 90, After checking our documents and my boyish grin he decided arresting a foreigner was to much paper work
15/10/10 Another day of driving through terrain similar to the highlands of Scotland arriving late in Halifax NS in the middle of a severe weather warning, Gusting 50mph winds and driving rain and terrible visibility. On Saturday with the rain still pouring we carried on the family search, Library and 4 hrs in a grave yard only to confirm that our knowledge is correct and no new clues, So Sunday we decided to head off to Country harbour where the family originated from, not knowing what an exciting day was in stall. A small half horse village with 2 dozen homes, We stopped at a petrol station for directions and clues, He pointed us to the family house, We cheekily called in and took tea with our new found cousins, One had even a book on the family linage The search update now has the family fighting with the loyalists supporting king George 111 in south Carolina 1780, The family had slaves, inter breeding (I know it explains a lot) and we could now have American roots.
We would come back? Love to, the scenery is as dramatic as any where we have seen But it would have to be in summer or a snow break, the downside is Canada is really expensive for accommodation (London prices for not a lot) and fuel
You have a nice day , the Chaffers
