I went back to the hostel to collect my bags and check out, then I waited outside at the bus stop for bus R13 which should go to the port where I could catch a ferry to Isla Mujeres. Every bus except for R13 seemed to pass, until I finally saw one and flagged it down. It was a small minibus and I jumped in, but a bit further down the road it stopped and everyone got off. The driver said something in very fast spanish and pointed at another bus, so I got off and got on the other bus and hoped I was heading in the right direction. The bus eventually stopped at the port, I hadn´t been asked for any money, so I gave the driver some money and he gave me almost the same amount back, it had cost pennies! I got my ticket for the ferry and it soon arrived. I took the option of sitting outside to enjoy the sunshine, and we were serenaded on the journey over but a couple of mexican singers. They collected tips towards the end of the journey, whilst the older guy started singing and dancing, I tried not to laugh but I did get the giggles!
When I got off the boat, I was surrounded by people offering tours, taxis, accommodation etc. I kept walking as quick as I could to somewhere quieter so I could get my bearings. I hadn´t booked accommodation, so I tried a couple of the budget places and they were full! The island didn´t seem that busy but I was getting a bit anxious. I saw a couple of backpacker types checking out of a hotel and asked them what the place was like and they said it was really nice. I asked if they had a room and the price, and it was double what I had been planning to spend at a hostel, but it was a large hotel room with a kitchenette and hot water, so I blew the budget and decided I would go self catering to save money. They were cleaning the room, so I found a cheap place for lunch, it was happy hour so I felt obliged to have a couple of mojitos. I found the local market and got some fruit, vegetables and fresh orange juice for the next couple of days, and then I went and said hello to Jim and Daisy at the dive shop who I had booked my refresher course and dives with for tomorrow. I then went back to the hotel to get my swimming stuff and hit the beach. The beach is lovely, soft white sand and the sea is warm but very shallow, which makes it difficult to swim as it doesn´t seem to get any deeper even if you go a long way out. I then head back to my room to cook dinner and I tried to stay awake and read my book but failed and fell asleep before 9pm. I had got a bit sunburned, as I didn´t manage to find any biodegradable suncream until the afternoon.
