The journey on the train from Bedford to Gatwick then flight to Cancun went smoothly. I arrived at Cancun airport at about 6pm and it was pleasantly warm (about 16 deg C). The queues through customs and immgration were long, in contrast to no queue at Gatwick. I had just missed a bus so waited 30 mins for the next one, I resisted the urge to get in a taxi and stick to my backpacker budget.... The bus journey to the centre of Cancun was straightforward and I found the hostel easily, which was about 5 mins walk away from the bus station. I had booked a private room with a shared bathroom, the hostel was kind of like a wooden jungle hut! I decided I wasn´t really hungry after all the food I was given on the flight, so tried to read to stay awake and get used to the time difference (-6 hrs) but fell asleep. Although the hostel was just off the main road through Cancun, it had a jungly garden and it really did feel like I was sleeping in the jungle rather than the centre of Cancun, and I was woken at about 5am by lots of bird song, not a bad way to be woken up. I read for a bit, before having an early shower - hot water yippee! I then headed to the kitchen for diy breakfast (bread to toast, fruit, yoghurt, granola and strong coffee. A few others appeared, mexican, chinese and german, no english speakers so far. After breakfast, I headed into Cancun to look for biodegrable suncream (doesn´t damage the coral when diving), and to get some mexican pesos and have a bit of a look around. I failed to find biodegradable sunscreen, and then the atm outside a bank swollowed my bank card. I went into the bank, and it my state of panic I was talking very quickly trying to explain what had happened, I got passed around 4 different members of the bank staff, with the amount of english gradually increasing until the last person spoke fluent english and he rescued my card from the machine - I almost kissed him! I´m glad I picked an atm outside of a bank so I could get my card back. I was by this time rather unimpressed with Cancun and wary of putting my card in an ATM, so I exchanged some dollars for pesos instead and decided to get out of here.
