We're currently still in Luang Prabang. We have decided to fly to Kuala Lumpar in Malaysia as its alot cheaper with Asia Air. Flying from Vientienne the capital of Laos. We're unabel to travel from Malasia through the thai southern boarder as there has been reports of trouble there and the govermount website advises not to travel though it. We have decided to fly from KL to the island of Krabi then make our way round the southern islands from there. We got a goof deal with that flight actually it was only 28 pounds. Mind you it is a very short flights so so it should be! We'l be spending 5 days in Malaysia. Did not enjoy my last experience in Malaysia so i hope my seond trip there is better than the first.
Kinda sad we can't go to Cambodia anymore but envermind. I have only been travelling Asia for just under 4 weeks and i have already spend nearly 700 pounds. Asia is no longer cheap to travel.
I found out some interesting information about Lao yesterday. I found out that it is very important to tip in restaurants etc as the rely on the trips quite alot as the wages are so poor. The drink that most the tourist drink is Beer Lao, but apparently that beer costs more than what the average Lao citizen earns in one day. They drink Lao Lao, which is made out of Rice and is 50% alcohol. Its extremly cheaper. They earn on average 600 pounds a year. lao is one of the poorest countries in the world and rely on other countries for donations. Motor cyles to hire is banned here in Lunang Prabang (the old capital City) as it would highten the chances of accidents on the road with touists and as the health care here is so poor, it would be bad for the reputation for the tourism here in Lao.
Also being caught with the possesion of illegal drugs is classed as bad as drug dealing and will usually lead to the death penalty. Also Lao prisons do not provide food so it would be up to the friends and family of the prisoners to provide them food.
There is a curfew in this country. You are required to be indoors by 12am, most places close at 11.30pm at the latest which is a government requirement. There is monks wondering the streets constantly, alot of tourists take photos of them, but the monks cannot understand why ppl take photos of them and whey we find them so interesting. They also wonder why if we come from a world where we have everything why are we here and so interested in how they live.
It is a good question really. I guess we are interesting in the way other cultures live and are eager to live more simply ourselves. They say the happiest, most content ppl live the most simplest lives.
I will update again soon xxx
