We left the hotel very early (7am) to travel to La Fortuna. On a mini bus we set off on the journey, stopping 3 hours in for breakfast, in a town called ...... I had a cheese tortilla which was very dry. I was feeling very sick because of my malaria tablets. The road was very bumpy and windy with many almost accident incidents. The van got stuck behind slow moving lorries which meant we were making very poor time. We stopped to pay out exit visas then carried on.
After a while we stopped an a group of 7 of us decided to do white water rafting, level 2-3. I was in a raft with Emma, Liz, Sive, michaela and James. We rafted down .... River, taking turns to 'ride the bull' which involved sitting at the front of the boat whilst going through rapids! We stopped for fruit and a little island.
One memorable moment was when we got stuck in a whirl pool. It was actually quite scary as are raft could not get out of it. On one attempt I was thrown from the raft, it took a while to surface and I was quite panicked. But as I was in a whirl pool I was lead back into the cove where I was handed a rope from another stranded boat. A few attempts later, with the help from another instructor we managed to get out, all very exhausted from paddling hard. The other stranded boat didn't have as much luck and capsized with little children in board. After a tiring rescue effort they all got back on board by were in shock. We were relieved to know we were near the end, so carried on, had a go at going through the rapids whilst siting in the water hanging onto the boat and made it back to the shore. Whilst trying to dry off it began to rain heavily. We had dinner, rice and beans and then got back on the mini bus for another 3 hours.
We arrived at the accommodation, hotel cabinitas and stumbled around in the rain and dark looking for the rooms. The rooms were basic, with two doubles, cold showers and air con. Once settled we went to the main area, had pizza and some rum and then turned in for the night
