Fri 10th Nov 2006 - Sihanoukville, Cambodia
Had our first moto-with-rucksack experience as we changed hostel to be closer to the beach. According to the lonely planet "the place to be" was further down the beach and a 5 minute moto ride away. In reality, we were just around the corner and the whole area was "the place to be" without having to move hostels in the baking heat of the middle of the day on empty stomachs!
We discovered Coaster's bar and guesthouse. The rooms were too expensive for us (being the new queens of budgeting), but we decided to make it our home for the duration of our stay anyway. The owner's (Bob and Don) became our new surrogate uncle's, though they didn't know this of course.
Once we checked in to our cheaper hostel, we returned to coaster's for breakfast. Cornflakes and toast - it was AMAZING to have cereal for the first time in 2 months. We then took our positions on their sunbeds (who cares if the guests paying for rooms don't get a seat?) and had a pedicure after lunch. Then who should walk around the corner and block our sunshine.... Dan and Mike from Siem Reap. They were not happy bunnies after their long journey from Phnom Penh, so we thought it best not to mention what a happy lazy day we were having.
We met a man on the beach called Kelvin. When we were still in the bar of Coaster's (taking shelter from the rain) that evening, he then offered the key for his room so we could have a shower. He thought we were nomad's with nowhere to stay or get ready!
Returned to our room where we decided that a busted shower head and leaking sink warranted us changing rooms. The only suitable room available had air-con, cost $4 more and meant we could use our GHD's. We were there like a shot!!
Aftere using the GHD's and making ourselves human again, we returned to Coaster's for tea. Kelvin walked past us about 3 times before we said hello - he didn't recognise us from the transformation of our appearance from nomad's to GHD goddesses!
We then to Dolphin Bar and started on the cocktails before spotting the lads from Siem Reap. Unsure of whether they would want our company we stayed put until we were invited over and the drinking games commenced. A crazy lady called Lynne joined us to play spoons. From then on Cathryn only ever had 3 cards (how hard is it to follow the rules of spoons?) and things started to get violent as the boys started to lose to the girls. Although Mike never seemed to lose given his skill of picking up two spoons at once. Two broken spoons later and following the search for the lost cards in the sand, we moved on to Eden bar. Cathryn and Jen hadn't finished their lovely bucket of vodka and sprite so we told the lovely lady called Lily that we'd bring her bucket back the next night. Stayed out until 5am.
Sat 11th Nov 2006 - Sihanoukville, Cambodia
The day started at midday with cornflakes and toast in Coaster's, before getting ourselves a sun lounger on Occtreal beach. We were attacked by kids trying to sell us bracelets etc etc. We caved in and gave them a dollar for a bracelet each, before playing card tricks and losing games of noughts and crosses to them.
Jen lost her rag with the manicure/pedicure women/man called Sarah and went for a march down the beach leaving Cathryn fending them off for the following 2 hours.
Out for another night at Dolphin bar we were harrassed by more children, but managed to divert one child (Tak) from hassling us by playing card games with him for an hour. He beat us both at s***head and Snap. The shame!
The Siem Reap boys found us again. Cathryn and Jen's bucket of vodka and sprite went straight to their heads - we turned into those annoying people that are drunk when everyone else is sober! Lily then told us off for not returning the previous night's bucket. Jen went into panic mode and tried to make out it was some other fictional girl that had taken it - not realising that Doug had already told Lily that it was us who had taken it.
On the boys insistence of finding a bar that was showing the football we followed suit on motos - Jen riding side saddle in an effort to preserve her dignity. We played Jenga, pool and connect four, whilst the prostitutes pole danced upstairs. Dan couldn't comprehend our sudden demise in pool playing ability and had serious second thoughts about picking Cathryn as his partner. He does not appreciate the power of the bucket!
We then had a moto race back to Monkey bar. But Cathryn's driver went the wrong way. Luckily the alcohol induced time delay of her brain meant they were going the right way again before panic mode kicked in about losing everyone else. The boys were SO not impressed by last orders being called at Monkey bar, and so we ended up at Eden AGAIN (the place needs an injection of personality!).
Sun 12th Nov 2006 - Sihanoukville, Cambodia
Decided to stay another day in Sihanoukville after the realisation that Cambodian transport was not efficient enough for us to see much more of the country with the time we had left. Back to Coaster's for more hangover-curing cornflakes. The milk was off, so Bob sent a man out on a moto to buy us some fresh milk. Anyone would think we were staying there!
Spent the say at Otres beach - no manicures, no annoying kids, no massages. Bliss!
After our stressful day on the beach we returned for a nap at the hostel, which lead to crazy dancing in an effort to wake ourselves up.
That night the bucket was finally returned to Lily. After we had ventured to one beach in the area and the boys had ventured to another, we all concluded that there was officially no nightlife in this area. So it was a quiet night of pool before ending up in Eden - the only bar open past 1am. The night then ended early after one American man pissed off every single person in the bar including the bar man.
