Tues 31st Oct 2006
Set off from Bangkok at 4am after 2 hours sleep (left Princess Rebecca peacefully sleeping) to get the plane to Phnom Penh. Arrived tired and very grumpy so decided to catch up on some much needed sleep.
Wed 1st Nov 2006
We went on a tuk-tuk to visit the killing fields. Very rocky road on the way there, but we managed to stop ourselves falling out of the tuk-tuk. Afterwards we went to the S-21 prison and learnt more about Cambodian history. The day made us appreciate how lucky we are.
Visited the Russian Market that afternoon where Jen bought some fake Birkenstock's to replace those now well and truly lost down the River Kwai and now somewhere in the Gulf of Thailand.
Made the most of the remote location and lack of people at our hostel and watched Bridget Jones on DVD. The tuk-tuk men were also having a sneaky peak.
Thurs 2nd Nov 2006
Sent our first shipment of Thailand tat home to the UK to the delight of our parents before visiting the Royal Palace of Cambodia. We had our long-awaited monk chat whilst there. However, it was not as religious as we had thought. But maybe because the monks were only 22 and more interested in our sleeping arrangements than Buddhism. They were supposed to be using us to practice their English. But they didn't think Jen was English and kept asking us how long we had been studying English for. Obviously not long enough!
Trauma followed that evening - the "vegetable" spring rolls contained meat much to the delight of vegetarian Cathryn. But she was relieved to find out it was pork and not dog. What Cathryn didn't eat, Jen kindly donated to a beggar. The restaurant staff did not seem to approve, but they shouldn't put pork in vegetable spring rolls!
Returned to the hostel where Gech (our surrogate mum) taught us card tricks and more for us to impress our fellow travellers with.
