Next stop, Prince Albert to stay with a long standing family friend Liz (Dad met Liz when he was in Zimbabwe all those years ago) Liz owns a guest house and we stayed, it was possibly the most gorgeous little house I have been to in the whole trip. The garden was huge with something new around each corner, it was also full of animals like hens, ducks and loads of chiwawas, well dad would say rats, I loved them. A sort of designer dog you can carry in your handbag!
When we arrived we got a tour of the local neighbourhood and met lots of very interesting people, firstly an ex South African soap star and then this amazing man called John. I still feel privileged that I had the opportunity to meet him. As one of Liz's neighbours who does not make contact with others in the village as he likes his own work space and home. Liz thought it would be lovely for Dad to meet him as he has created a piece of art work based on a London Bobby. SO we knocked on his door and very luckily he answered. John then shoed us some of his work, as a poet, artist and sculptor I was blown away. His work was amazing. At the end of the meeting dad asked if we could maybe have a copy of a poem and the Bobby picture. We left amazed and in hope that we would have something to remember.
The next day Liz had a huge adventure planned, up early at 6am we hit the road to cross the Swartburg Pass, which goes over the top of the mountain range. It was incredible, if you ask Dad he will tell you the history and about the amazing engineering feat that it is... he still doesn't know how long it took though! The views were amazing... We made our way down the other side to get to a waterfall. We had been booked onto a cave tour at the Cango Cave and made our way over, it was pretty awesome. As most of you know Dad is not in the fittest of conditions, however a guy on the tour was about the size of a house had to leave the tour because of his heart condition! Oh my goodness! We bumped into a family that had also been on the game reserve trip which was an excellent surprise!
I was then very excited to learn that there was a conservation park near by with tiger cubs and cheetah cubs. I am sure you have now all seen the pictures, but it was amazing. They were so cute and I could have stayed in there area for hours. We saw lots of other cool animals, which they were helping. After a pretty long but amazing day we headed back home.
The next morning Liz comes into the living room and tells us that we have an appointment, John has phoned and asked Dad and myself to go around to his house to give us some things. Apparently this is unheard of, I was so excited. Dad and i made ourselves presentable and headed off to John's. Where he gave Dad an huge copy of the Bobby picture including the poem to accompany. I also was given a complete set of his card art work and copies of the poems I loved so much from the previous night. We then talked for about and hour, I am not going to lie most of the stuff went over my head, but it was a total honour to listen to John and for John to share his beautiful home and work with us. Still blown away to this day.
The rest of the day was filled with a wonderful lunch and trip to a remote Fig Farm. I was pretty tired after the long day. Our stay with Liz was so special I could have stayed for a very long time. Liz if you read this you must come to France this year, it would be just great to see you again!
