We met our friend Roz in Wellington which was a welcome meet up for both parties I think.
I ate my first decent, home cooked meal in aaaaages and then we headed out to check out the coffee shops that Wellington has a rising reputation for. Gluten-free choc fudge brownie was what I found myself tucking in to and it tasted divine. Just what the doctor ordered.
We stayed at a hostel called Wellywood and the outside of the building is Zebra striped. Pretty easy to spot!
Wellington is in a massive valley on the coast and the hills run right into the city centre so i went for a really good run up and down the hills and along the harbour front. The hostel staff told me I was bonkers and it was one of the coldest nights so far but I can promise you I've been out in a lot worse in Newcastle!
We had a casual dinner of a banana, a yogurt, some grapes and 2 large glasses of vino and then headed out to check out Wellington's night life.
Bar 1 was an Irish bar but strangely enough other than the Irish name had nothing else Irish about it.
Bar 2 was a champagne bar! As you can imagine I was in seveneth heaven. Got a pretty good deal on our champagne cocktails. £5 each! BARGAIN
We then headed to a 'club.' More like a bar that just played music on 2 floors, with a small dancefloor. Within 2 minutes flat I'd already got myself a drink bought by some guy - bit dodgy looking but the bar girl told me I may as well take him up on his offer and she'll hand it straight to me - saved myself a fiver anyway. Then I made myself miraculously disappear off into the club in about 2 seconds. We met some guys - one who introduced himself as the friend of the coffee shop owner across the way. A friend soon appeared and when it became quickly apparent that he wasn't the owner of the coffee shop and I wouldn't be getting any free cake the next day, I soon switched off. He was also not good looking! Unfortunate.
It poured down all of Saturday, but we still went on a trek around the city, taking in the stadium, shops and got a tram up to the peak, where we drank yet more coffee. We also went to Te Papa museum - a massive museum that has all sorts of weird and wonderful things including a 'colossal squid' which was one massive squid preserved in some massive tank.
I finally got to go to a proper rugby match. We went to see the local Wellington team - Hurricanes - v the Crusaders - a team based in Christchurch who are the most successful rugby union team out here. 4 All Blacks from the Hurricanes had suddenly been sacked so there was quite a lot of uproar about the game. The decent rugby match, not to mention the players, was enough to make me happy!
