I know I've missed out some of Sydney and will update that later but I thought I'd let you all know the current predicament.
It is now 0320 in the morning of Thursday 16th June and I'm wide awake.
I'm wide awake because we're scared. Scared of when the next earthquake will hit. We arrived in CC yesterday lunch and everyone is talking about the tremors. Literally everyone. At first it seemed a bit of a joke. Not that it's funny but we had no idea how serious the problem was.
Obvously we'd both seen the news and knew that there were tremors here but actually there are up to 70 per day. These range from one which you would barely feel or may think you'd just put ur foot onto some uneven ground, to ones where the wardrobe starts banging. The issue is, you have no idea in the split second that the tremor starts whether this is the one you need to take cover for or not.
I can tell you one thing, I don't really want to find out.
I'd say over the past few months I've become a pretty strong person, but I'm not strong enough to live my life in constant fear.
I was actually coping ok with it but when Tess woke me at 2am, scared senseless herself, I finally gave into the fear and accepted that us being here is just ridiculous. Loads of locals are leaving. Most of the ex-pats have returned home and for some ridiculous reason, we've moved in. Moved in about 1/2 mile from the red zone which is the area cordened off because the buildings are so badly damaged and unsafe.
Tess thinks it's important to point out to anyone thinking that we're total wimps that up until Monday the tremors were few and far between and people were getting on with things here. Even the experts are saying that more quakes are expected and they are finding it increasingly hard to predict when/where they are going to be.
So it is now 0330 in the morning. The med school in Newcastle say theyre happy to support us leaving and you know what, right now I'd give up every Saturday next term to make up for missed time here, if it meant we could leave pronto.
Tess; new quote is "let's be guided by the light." That means, if you think you just felt a tremor then look at the light and if that's moving then it's a good indicator that it wasn't a phantom tremor that we'd dreamt up.
On a positive note, we are now fully informed of what to do if an earthquake hits. Let's hope we don't have to put it into use over the next 24 hours whilst we sort ourselves out!!
Love and hugs, xxx
