Today we set off to see the sights and experience the smells of Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a great bike road network, with dedicated bike 'roads', so we decided to hire two for the day. And wouldn't you know it, the 4th vehicle we've hired on our trip and the 4th time it's snowed just after we set out! Easy enough to put up with in a car, not so great on a bike! But we battled through and still got to see a few of the Amsterdam attractions.
First stop was a sports place that sells hiking boots. With only a few days left before we head off to the Inca Trail we thought it was about time we got some kind of suitable shoes to walk in! Now we just have to find suitcase space to fit them in…
Next was the sex museum, and boy wasn't that an eye opener! It's the first time we've felt naughty just holding hands!
Then it was off to the Heineken Brewery, but with a line up that went half way around the block we decided to give the tour a swerve and go to a cafe and have one instead.
From there we found ourselves at the Amsterdam Ice Bar, which funnily enough is exactly what it sounds like it is. A room with a bar, both made almost solely from ice. So you loan a stupid looking silver cape and drink shots from shot glasses also made out of ice. Something different.
After a few shots and a few more beers / cocktails, we thought its be safer if we returned the bikes. Who knew the Dutch police did random breath testing for bike riders?? Luckily not on us, so we got the bikes back without any major accidents or skin missing.
To see the other side if Amsterdam we decided to go for a walk to the red light district tonight. There's pretty much a Koffee shop (cafe that sells marijuana) within a stones throw of you at all times and if you can't see a red light above a little glass door in the wall you must have your eyes closed. It really is a different world.
After tea it was time to pack our bags. Now bed time before the bag drag to Paris tomorrow.
