Well well well, where to even begin to describe the events that made our 5 night stay in Rome so amazing.Arriving in this unique city on the evening of the 7th we caught our buses and metros to our campsite (Plus Camping Roma) and were soon settled in a cool small tent in the shade of the large trees and had a quiet evening relaxing in our new home.We awoke the next morning recharged and ready to explore another new city.We got some food from the store and then set off to catch our buses and metros into the city.As we took our first steps out of the metro station and into the heart of Rome, we were immediately confronted with the historic Roman Colosseum erected just across the streets from the station. The sheer enormity of this structure stole our breath away as we just stood, jaw dropped as we were finally face to face with this towering giant that we have for ever heard and dreamed of.With crowds intolerable we decided to skip seeing some of the main sites that morning, and instead took our time wandering about the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palantine Hill.We eventually arrived at a HUGE white building, curious on what it was we decided to go in have a look and a quick break in the shade. We ended up finding an amazing viewpoint that gave us a breathtaking view of this new city. With miles and miles of building that seem to just grow off one another, I feel that the size of this city now was just as comparable to the Rome 2000 years ago, as we studied that remnants of the massive buildings that once stood so tall and strong. As the day rolled on we continued to trek about the city seeing such sites like the GIANT Panthalon and the Cappucian Crypt. This Crypt was without the creepiest, weirdest, bizarre thing that I have ever seen.Evidentially back in the early days of Rome some monks decided that it would be a cool idea to take all the body parts of the massive amount of dead people and use all their bones to build some shrines in a church instead of leaving them in the over filled catacombs. Thus now there are 5 small rooms that are filled with shrines made all of human bones. This bizarre site had various designs, but just to get a picture, in one room there were 3 arches on a back wall, and just one or these arches contained 179 human skulls! Ya weird, we weren't allowed to take photos in here cause it's a "holy place" so sorry you all can't see, Google it!Not much of an exciting evening for us, just a 12 hour power nap.
Day 2 in Rome turned out to be just as exciting as day one, we again failed at getting out early to avoid lines, yet we again happened to arrive right at noon again and were then forced to wait in the hour and a half line to get into the Roman Forum and Palantine Hill. Finally we were in and spent the next 4 hours or so wandering the remains if this once mighty city, that now just stands as a old sign of what use to be.Seeing the scale on which the Romans built was amazing! As one guide said, "the Romans built building to last 3000 years, while we now build building to last 100 and then we rebuild them."After seeing all that we thought we could visit, we finally left the Forum and walked across the street to now explore the massive Colosseum. We wandered about the levels that remain and just tried to imagine what this scene would have been like 200o years ago.Surprisingly it was a lot smaller inside than I had expected, this is probably due to the fact that 2000 years of weathering a building can change it a bit.Eventually we were exhausted so we retired to our campsite for the evening.Although we thought our day was over, we happened to meet one Aussi girl, and two Germans around the campsite. We ended up partying the night away with new friends.
Day 3 in Rome we again got out late, this time due to a slow start due to the previous nights events. We decided that our new friends would come out and sight see with us, so the 5 of us now set off in the city.We decided to go to the Vatican and ended up going through the Mueseum, about 4 miles of hallways we made it out dead, tired, and hungry with just the satisfaction of having seen the Sistine Chappell. We got some food at a local café, turned out to be not what were expecting, but then took off to go see the outside of Saint Peter's Basilica. After enjoying the view of the largest church in the world, we caught the metro and arrived at the famous Spanish Steps. We took a long break enjoying the view and people watching until we all realized that we were pretty hungry. So Jay, the Germans, and I all set off to find some cheaper food compared to our overpriced lunch. We returned home to the campsite well fed after an enjoyable pasta and salad dinner in the warm Italian evening. We got some beers and wine for the market, and decided to have another wild evening dancing and partying the night away in the company of new great friends.
Our last day in Rome, so we decided to go and see the inside of the famous Basilica. We explored the massive hallways, arches and domes that literally grew up around us.Eventually we discovered that we could go up into the main large dome, after spending a inflated 7 Euros, we were soon looking out on the most amazing view of this enormous city as we took a minute to soak up the great experiences of that this city was able to offer us.We returned to our campsite for a final night of living it up with the people that without them this city would have been half of what it was.I left Rome knowing that I was to return and thankful of all who made it amazing.
