Caroline's World Tour
We're now in Dunedin, over on the East Coast this time, having left Queenstown yesterday afternoon. It was quite a long drive, so we didn't get up to anything more exciting than a drawn-out game of Monopoly once we'd arrived! But today has been a great day, not least for all the chocolate......
Dunedin has a Cadbury's World! It is the centre of Cadbury's production for the whole of New Zealand, and seems to make loads of varieties that we don't get in the UK, like a Cadbury's version of a Mars Bar....mmmmm. We got loads of free choccie, but I've got a bit of a cold so I'm going to have to save it for when I've got my sense of taste back!
After that we decided to go on a bit of a wildlife tour, so headed off to the Otago Peninsula, known for penguins, seals and albatross. We went to Penguin Place, a yellow-eyed penguin reserve, and got taken on a very good guided tour of their trenches and tunnels which lead to various hides. The yellow-eyed penguins are really shy, so you have to be quiet and hidden - we were a small group so got to see them really quite close. Their eyes really are yellow - bit strange to look at! They apparently have Little Blue penguins in the area too, but we didn't get to see any of those. We stopped at Pilot Beach and could see some seals from a distance, but they were just sleeping, so not quite as entertaining as the ones in Kaikoura! And as for Albatross, well, we saw them close up in Kaikoura - from any other distance they just look like seagulls......
We did the coastal road along the peninsula, and then came back along the high road - this area is not for the faint-hearted, but if you can brave the sheer drops its very rewarding, the whole area is absolutely stunning. I know I say this about everywhere in NZ but it really is!! We're off back to Christchurch tomorrow, with a possible stop in Oamaru for yet more penguins....fingers crossed!
