Potosi, the highest city of it´s size in the world (4,070m). It´s a charming place filled with colonial churches & narrow streets and was once famed for its silver mining; the majority of it owned by the Spanish and shipped back to Europe. Nevertheless they still mine there for scraps of silver today.
We wondered the streets, still struggling with the altitude, checking out the markets where we came across a stall selling all sorts of puppies(ah soooo cute) but when we wondered into the poorer residential area the feral dogs were not so cute and chased us away back down the hill.
Next we went to Sucre (the official capital). It´s a lot more civilized, with nice modern bars and restaurants around yet another beautiful colonial plaza; and more importantly it´s a mere 2790m above sea level, which meant a welcome rest for our lungs and no more headaches!! The highlight was walking to the highest point in the city and finding a quality cup of coffee in a pretty garden with deck chairs and watching the sun setting over the city.
