We arrived in Kanchanaburi yesterday lunchtime and had trouble finding the Apple Retreat where we were staying. When we did find it, we found a beautiful setting with the restaurant overlooking the river Kwai and our accommodation clean and fresh. Off course I wanted to take a photo, but couldn't find the camera, panic set in and things were flown out of bags, until we realised it must be on the mini-bus. We contacted the company and they rang us back after an agonising 5 minutes to say it was at their office, 10 minutes walk away. We were so relieved to have it back.
So after our little drama, we had lunch and enjoyed the best meal so far in Thailand, the portions were perfect and the flavours delicious, we thought we could easily have lunch and dinner here for the next few days. After lunch we wandered into town looking at what other restaurants and bars there were, it didn't look promising. We went to the Death Railway museum and learnt so much about what really went on, it wasn't until you saw the maps that you realised how much Japan had taken over and their power. They had photos of the construction and the POWs, it was shocking to see and read about the treatment of human beings. The most shocking thing was the number of Asian POWs who died, tens of thousands and the Japanese didn't keep any records, so thousands of mens family have no idea what happened to them and never will. Luckily we got a free cup of tea at the end and some time to think about it all.
We headed back to our retreat, called home and got ready for another cracking dinner. This time I had fish with chilli and sweat and sour sauce, the fish came out whole, bones and all, but the meat was so tender it just fell off and no small bones, it was delicious. The worst thing was I was already thinking about what I would have the next night.
Today we had a trip organised and left at 8am and headed to the Erawen Falls, the famous 7 tierred falls with gorgeous pools for swimming in, so we were looking forward to cooling off, because even at 8am it was still boiling. We walked up to the 3rd pool as this looked quieter, unfortunately there was a lot of fish and after going in up to my waist and having little fishing sucking my skin, I decided to get out and let Pete swim about. We walked up to the fourth tier afterwards just to take some photos, before heading back down for an early lunch.
Next we went elephant trekking a really exciting experience, at first you feel very worried that you will be sat on this huge creature, but once on and when you have got used to the rocking, it was great and although it was only about half an hour, it was fun having ours stear off into the vegetation and even sneeze on us (purposefully). After we fed him some bananas and cooled him off with a hose pipe.
Next it was bamboo rafting and we were rather relived to have a man do it for us, after our last tiring kayaking experience we were less than keen. It was lovely and relaxing to sit back and dip your feet in the cool water. Others swam in the river, but after the stories we had heard the night before about massive snakes in there, we decided against it. The rafting was really too short, but we had to catch the train along the death railway. It was amazing to see the tight corners the track had to bend around and the amount of work to make it clearly was immense, especially with the limited tools they had. We finished off the trip by seeing the famous bridge over the river Kwai, unfortunately it is quite touristy around there, but it was great to see and walk along.
I am now looking forward to finishing off a cracking day, with an equally cracking dinner.
