Yesterday we went on our river tour and luckily had our own boat and guide. It was a long tail boat with a massive truck engine, so it was quite quick. The river was choppy because of the all the traffic making the boat rock and roll a lot. Once we headed onto the side canals it was much calmer as we went passed all the houses, with kids waving at us before diving into the water, I can't say I would like to follow looking at the colour of the water. The boat stopped and our guide brought some fish food and threw it into the water, hundreds of catfish surfaced grabbing the food and splashing us. We then saw a crocodile, not something you would expect to see, we tried to get a photo, but it moved rather quickly. It was then time to leave the boat and visit the giant reclining Buddha. It was amazing to see and we were shocked at the size, we knew it was big, but not that big. Its feet our covered in a mother of pearl pattern and the rest of it gold leaf, it was truly opulent and a taste of what was to come at the palace.
For the palace Pete had to borrow some trousers to cover his knees and me a shirt, I had a shawl around my shoulders, but clearly that wasn't enough. Once we were taken aback by the colours of the temples, one was all gold leaf, the other which housed the jade Buddha was covered in tiny coloured tiles and shimmered in the sunlight. There was even a huge model of Angkor Wat, it was said that a King wanted to move Angkor Wat brick by brick to Thailand and his advisors realized that it would take hundreds of years to do, so built a model instead.
We then headed back to our guesthouse and then went for some lunch, pad thai again, before chilling out and napping in our room.
Today we woke up and got a tuk tuk to the Vimanek Palace, a building made of golden teak wood with no nails. We had a free ticket because we had been to the Grand Palace. It was a stunning building and in the complex there were several other grand buildings for to photograph. We had a tour around the palace it was very informative if slightly rushed.
