Today is our last day in the picturesque town of Melaka. It is incredibly hot here so all our exploring is done in the morning and the afternoon is spent chilling out and napping in our room. We are in the heart of Chinatown, where the streets are lined with a mix of colonial buildings, some beautifully maintained and others with paint peeling gives this place a real charm.
Yesterday we took a boat trip down the river, a must for you to see the Little Morten village, filled with traditional Malaysian houses. Pete was more interested in the water lizard than the other sites, typical. Most of the sites are within walking distance so we packed quite a lot in yesterday before popping to the delightful Heeren House for lunch. On our first night we went to the night market on Jonka Street, a bustling place, the street filled with red lanterns and a mixture of stalls selling some traditional ware, but also offering the tourist tack you find most places.
Yet again we have both been impressed by the friendliness of the people we have met, striking up conversations with people on the street, its fantastic. Coming from places like Thailand and Vietnam, where people who want to talk are invariably trying to sell you something, its makes a nice change to have people just wanting a chat and genuinely interested in you. We met an English couple the other day, and they said the same, they only came to Melaka for a holiday and ended up staying permanently.
Tomorrow we are off to Singapore for a few nights of luxury on Pete's Dad. We will also be unloading a lot of our unecessary baggage. ...which means that since we decided that, Carla has made the most of it by buying everything in site! After starting off with three bags, we are now on 7 and rising....
Once again, just want to thank all those who have left us messages on our message board, we love reading them and they always put smiles on our faces.
