Lay around the pool this morning and then picked up for a trip at 2.30 pm ,to the top of Mauna Kea which houses some of the most powerful telescopes in the world- higher than mount evererest from its base, albeit most of it is covered by the pacific sea! Still 13,976 feet , above more than 40 % of the atmosphere , it was freezing, and difficult to breath. You look down on the clouds and we could see the peak of the mountain at Maui in the distance, where we will be going tomorrow. Felt a little sick and light headed. Witnessed the sun go down over the mountain which was spectacular, then headed down to 9000 feet and set up our huge telescope to look at the stars in a crisp and clear evening. Andromeda galaxy, 2.5 million light years away and on a collision course with the Milky way in about 3-4 billion years was amazing. My favourite however, was the moon- you could see the craters clearly and it was so bright. Wirnessed the brightest shooting star i have ever seen. Hot chocolate and cookies and then the 60 min journey down the mountain - off to bed ready for an early morning flight to Maui. I think its time just to chill for 3 days. As Myles said- I'm historied out dad! Kids have been great.
