We finally arrived in Airlie Beach after 2 flights and a bus ride. Our hostel was lovely.I had been dreading it cos was told when booking they only had a 10 bed room available. But, whatever happened we got lucky and had a 4 bed room! And it was a nice room!Yeah.Airlie Beach was a bit cooler, not humid thankfully. We booked our trips for the next few days, had our dins and had an early night.Over night travel takes a lot out of you.
Friday the 13th was our Whitsunday's trip.Out on a catamaran for the day.All laid on day trip.Food, drink, fun!!Weather was only ok.Again, in a place we thought woud be guaranteed sunshine, weather was leaving us down.We caught the end of that cyclone that hit OZ.Typical, as if we didn't have enough rain in our lives! But it was ok for the most part.It was still warm, just overcast. We expected to be way more tanned by now, wer so vain! The tan plan was not going to plan! But the trip was good fun.We were fed well, there was beer and wine, great stuff, and we had great fun getting soaked on the boat! The waters were quite choppy from the cyclone, still so the boat was up and down and we got soaked a few times, it was great fun!!I love a good boat ride! One of the sails broke also, the wind was so high.Luckily it didn't hit anyone on the face! That was the end of our fun up the front of the boat, booo!We sailed around the Whitsunday Islands. We stopped off at Whitehaven Beach, which Karen raved about and said was her fave beach of ALL time.Well…my expectations were very high…but I was let down LDue to the tide being in, all the spectacular, sweeping sand formations that you see in all the postcards, were covered over.It looked like any other beach to me, except a bit whiter maybe. When I saw it I said is this it?!Oh well, I'll just HAVE to go back!We got off the boat and got have a swim and walk around the lovely white sand.We also saw a turtle!Dude!!He was too fast for my camera so I have no pic, so cool to see one!
Next day was Great Barrier Reef Trip!Right before we went on our trip I booked my skydive, finally!!Scary, I hummed and hawed about it since NZ.It was happening tomorrow!
Weather was even worse today. We feared the trip might be cancelled, some people decided not to go at all.We were just not lucky with weather.Off we went anyway, much bigger boat this time. They announced about the waters being very rough and they were selling sea sickness tablets. We were like, nah, wer tough, we'll be fine!Man, it was rough.I thought with the boat being bigger, it couldn't be as up and down as the day before but it was a rough ride.I don't really suffer from travel sickness, we wer grand but I defo felt a bit funny. There was a few poor souls throwing up.We got out of the rough waters and headed towards this permanent raft thing they have out on the reef.We got geared up and set off to do some snorkelling in the deep ocean sea!Waters were rough. It's scary feeling like you really have no control out there. The ocean is a woman to be feared! The tour guys were well equipped though.Proper water dudes keeping an eye on us out there, made me feel much more safer! So I swam around, or rather battled with the current.Visability was not the best but as I had never seen reef like this before I thought it was great.I had been given an under water camera freebie by the hostel (bonus!!Rite on time) so I was snapping away.Must get that film developed.Saw some fab fish, beautiful colours, coral, it was so close. It was lovely. Imagine if visability had been clear!Wow.Great fun.Back on board our boat after that for lunch and sail back.We decided to take tablets this time.We gave in.But being out at rough sea all day with no break on dry land does give you a bit of an uneasiness. The sun came out for a bit on the way back.I did some sunbathing while Karen got chatted up!I leave her for half an hour and that's what happens!!It was a rough one again so I have to say we were pretty happy to get onto land that evening.I think it took a bit out of us.But we had a good 2 days trips, despite the disappointing weather!
