After a peaceful night's sleep we drove the moke out to Port Gibbon and onto Point Gibbon some 25kmsouth west of Cowell on the Southern Ocean and has a small sea lion colony. Port Gibbon was an old shipping port, but only a part of the original jetty remains. Only fishing shacks here now with wide sandy beaches and a backdrop of cliff. We were spoilt to see the sea lions dozing at the waters edge. They were initially scared off by us but we waited patiently and they came back. It was fantastic to watch them. The cliffs were gone replaced by white sand hills. But we couldn’t stay there all day as there were other things to see and do. So we drove back to Cowell, put the car on the trailer and off we went.
Arno Bay was a delightful lunch stopover.
We arrived at Tumby Bay and had plenty of time to drive to Koppio Smithy’s Museum about 20km away. It was really interesting to see how people lived back in the day. During our drive Kimbo decided he’d try his hand at fishing tomorrow. So once we got back to the bus he gathered his fishing gear together in readiness…….could be an interesting day tomorrow and perhaps fish for dinner.
The fishing destination of Wiseman's Beach was selected (via Second Creek and Red Point) and we saw our first snakes on the way which was a little unnerving. The beach although not easy to find was worth it as we could drive onto the beach. Kimbo tried unsuccessfully for 2 hours to catch anything but the fact that two stingrays were hanging around probably had something to do with it. Finally he packed it in and we went to Lipson Cove where he tried again but the result was the same. An old chap he was talking to said it was too windy to fish so I guess that’s as good a reason as any.
Although the day had been beautiful there was a change on the way, so when we got home we sat outside with a drink and watched the change move in. It was very calm overnight so maybe it’s the calm before the storm. Perfect for playing crib.
