It was a warm morning but the change was rapidly moving in. By the time we left Tumby the wind was up and it was starting to rain and got steadily heavier and windier as the day went on. Kimbo's wiper stopped working so he had to pull over and undertake some running repairs. Then the phone broke down!
The caravan park was a haven where we could sit out the storm - well it was perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Next morning we took the phone in to be looked at and was told it was cactus, so we’ve sent it off to Motorola and it should be back sometime next week. It was still a miserable day, cold and windy. We went for a drive up to Winters Hill lookout but it wasn’t ideal for a nice view of the area. Nothing else to do but a bit of shopping!
Tuesday and the weather isn’t much better but we decided to take a trip through Whalers Way, it took nearly all day as there’s so much to see. Because the weather was so rough the sea was monstrous and quite frankly frightening. Apparently 2 people have drowned at Cape Carnot and I’m not surprised, it certainly isn’t a place I’d like to fall into some of the waves crashing in were huge. The seals at Cape Wiles were gorgeous, the rough sea and cold didn’t seem to worry them at all.
We met our first travellers who are under 60 today, the obligatory pensioners who told us all about their travels and then a young couple who are also travelling in a bus and also heading to Perth, who knows we may see them again.
The weather is deteriorating and I had to put the heater and the electric blanket on tonight, who would have thought it possible for November?
Ah Linda thank you for the wonderful night’s sleep. Thursday and the weather isn’t getting any better – max of 17 today…………brrrr! We went for another drive this time to Tod Reservoir via Wanilla but couldn’t find the sand hills we saw from the lookout the other day…..mystifying! We came back through Greenpatch and North Shields, classic little Aussie "villages" that were probably once thriving. It was an afternoon to get comfy and read and that’s exactly what I did. After dinner we rugged up and went for a walk down to the jetties.
Friday and no news about the phone so it looks like we’ll be here a bit longer. We wandered aimlessly around town and paid some bills, why is it that even while travelling there are bills to pay???? Thankfully the weather is improving, a lot sunnier and warmer – 20 degrees and set to increase. Kimbo thinks a surf is in order, so that’ll be on the cards tomorrow all going well.
What a glorious Saturday 24 degrees and sunny and it’s time for a surf at Fisheries – the home of the Great White shark!!!!! Off we went and we were about halfway there when we rounded a corner and a car flicked up a stone and broke the windscreen – scared the bloody daylights out of me. After Kimbo smashed it out he insisted on continuing on – just for the record I would have preferred to go home!! The road conditions were terrible and with no windscreen, not pleasant. Then about halfway from the bitumen turnoff to Fisheries I noticed the back flap was up and Kimbo’s towel was gone. Not to be deterred we turned around and went back almost all the way back to the bitumen to pick up his towel, turn around and continue back over the shocking gravel “road”. Kimbo had a wonderful time surfing while I tried to keep an eye on him (I was on shark patrol) and keep a little kid and the flies from driving me crazy. Thankfully after two hours he’d had enough and we were on our way home. I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning out the car and trying to come to grips with the fact that we’ll be here for a few days longer given we’ll need a new windscreen. Time to break out the bikes!
Sunday and all’s well. Kimbo decided he wanted to go surfing after brekky but not this little black duck there was no way he was going to get me back on that road without a windscreen, especially after I’d cleaned up the bloody car yesterday!!!! He came back a couple of hours later, no surf! He had a go at fishing and came up empty handed so we went for a walk along the Parnkalla walking trail along the coast which was lovely and we even got quite warm in the 25 degree conditions.
Not a happy camper as I woke Monday morning, we were out of gas and I had to shower in the ablution block!!! Kimbo rang Craig who hopes to have the windscreen here tomorrow and the crash repair guy said he can fit it straight away, so maybe our days in Port Lincoln are numbered. Just as the weather was starting to improve a change was coming and our 27 degree day was quickly disappearing. We raced home with a full gas bottle just before it started to rain. Kimbo spent the afternoon fishing with the company of the little kids from the bus next door, all he did was basically feed the fish! Rang Craig and Julie, great news we’re going to have a niece/nephew due on 10th July next year.
This Tuesday I woke up with the strangest feeling, one I’ve never had before. I don’t have to get up to do anything in particular. It’s quite a bizarre concept – I’m sure I’ll get used to it. The windscreen is here and Kimbo went off to help the guy fit it. He was then back and we were able to re-pack the car and get everything ready for our departure tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll know more about the phone tomorrow but if it’s not here we can come back and pick it up.
